Coyote Map: Where Have You Seen Them around Western Springs?

We asked readers where they've spotted coyotes around Western Springs, La Grange and other nearby neighborhoods. Got a sighting to add? Tell us in the comments.

Cook County's coyote population is in the low thousands, according to the forest preserve.

But while there certainly aren't that many living right here in Western Springs, Patch readers report seeing them all over the place in and around the community.

We've plotted coyote sightings from readers on the interactive map above. If you've spotted one in the area, let me know in the comments and I'll add it to the map.

The village of Western Springs asks that you follow this advice to help keep coyotes out of your yard:

  • Secure your trash so coyotes can't go sniffing through it.
  • Keep bird food off the ground.
  • Surround your yard with a fence and leave outdoor lights on overnight.
  • Don't leave pets unattended when they're outdoors.

Here are a few tips from the Forest Preserve District of Cook County on what to do if you see a coyote:

  • Take a moment to appreciate what the forest preserve calls "this beautiful and elusive animal." Keep in mind that coyotes are not generally a threat to people. Small dogs? Now that's another story.
  • If the coyote comes toward you, yell, wave your arms or throw something at it. Most will run away.
  • If the coyote doesn't run away and you feel it poses a danger, call 911.

We have seen two strolling up the sidewalk on the 50-100 block of 7th Ave. in LaGrange. Also a yard in the 300 block of LaGrange road.

Three weeks ago tomorrow, a coyote ran off of Gilbert Avenue along my driveway, past the garage and into the south side of my back yard.

I have seen what I thought were foxes in the Field Park area of Western Springs. Do we have both?
