The Highlands education funding organization's grants for the 2012-2013 school year run from educational events and scholarships to Native American flutes for a music class.

The 17-year-old District 106 Education Foundation has unveiled its grants for the 2012-2013 school: a sum totaling $48,000 to be put towards 17 different grants aimed at fostering education for students in D106.

Funded by volunteer contributions and various Foundation activities (Annual Dinner Dance, Trivia Night, Second City Comedy Night, etc.,) the wide variety of grants supports a number of different opportunities for D106 kids. The Foundation has awarded over $800,000 in such grants since 1995.

In 2012, the most expensive grants are $6,655 for new cardio equipment for Highlands Middle School and $6,000 for an EDU 2.0 learning system, also for the middle school, as well as $4,500 for a 7th- and 8th-grade student trip to the Iron Oaks Adventure Center for teamwork-building and personal-development exercises.
