CodeRED Alert: Delay in Restoring Power, Rec Center Designated for Cooling

A message sent out through the emergency notification system states the the Western Springs Recreation Center will remain open for anyone needing a place to cool down.

A CodeRED alert sent out at 4:50 p.m. on Monday afternoon warned residents that their power could be out for an extended period of time following Monday morning's flash storm and declared that the Village Recreation Center (1500 Walker Street) would be open as a cooling center for anyone who needs it.

“The Village of Western Springs has experienced significant power outages as a result of this morning’s severe weather event," the message said.

"Commonwealth Edison officials have informed the Village that power throughout its service area may not be restored for several days."

This marks the second time this year that the Rec Center will be used as an emergency shelter. It was formerly used as a warming center during the massive February blizzard, although only one elderly Springdale man made use of it at the time.

The alert also asked residents to "please check on your neighbors and those who may have special needs."
