Emerald Ash Borer: Residents Asked to Notify Village of Symptoms

Residents are asked to notify the village of any trees showing symptoms of emerald ash borer.

The Village of Western Springs this month began treatment for emerald ash borer on parkway trees.

The application process involves an injection of the pesticide, Tree-Age, into the base of the tree. Residents are asked to report to Public Works, 708-246-1800, Ext. 200, any ash trees showing emerald ash borer symptoms.

The most common symptoms include: branch dieback, bark splits, suckering and D-shaped emergence holes.

Residents who want to treat their own trees are also asked to notify the village for record-keeping purposes. Any tree treated by the Village or a private resident does not guarantee the tree will not be removed by the Public Works Department, according to the village.

Any parkway tree that is considered a public safety hazard or a vector for the further spread of the emerald ash borer may be identified for removal by the Village forester.

Full information regarding the application process, the map of the proposed application locations and a brochure on emerald ash borer are available here.
