The Big Melt Is Coming—Temperatures Up to 46 Degrees Next Week

If the snow and freezing cold have got you down, rejoice—the western suburbs will get a break next week as temperatures slowly rise to the mid-40s.

Those giant piles of snow everywhere may be a good deal smaller after the week of Valentine’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures around Lyons Township (including La Grange, La Grange Park and Western Springs) will steadily increase over the course of the next week, reaching a high of 46 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday. The near-ubiquitous winter “Hazardous Weather Warning” has even been lifted for the region.

A 30 percent chance of snow on Saturday will give way to a high of 34 degrees, and a high of 37 on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday should be clear, with highs around 35 and 37, respectively.

After Tuesday, temperatures are unlikely to drop below freezing even at night. The high for Wednesday is 40, and Thursday a whopping 45—although there is the possibility of light rain later in the week.

This is excellent news for locals sick of huge piles of snow from obstructing sidewalks and roadways. Perhaps Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of an early spring will come true after all. (Or perhaps not … late February and March are just as likely to hit us with another storm.)

While typically harmless, melting snow can cause a danger of minor floods if paired with deep-frozen ground (into which runoff cannot percolate) and rain. Overnight freezing can also slow melting and prevent floods. Stay tuned to Patch updates on any potential flooding in the region. Although, La Grange and La Grange Park officials don't expect flooding to be an issue.

This Patch editor, for one, will be breaking out a driver and heading for the (heated) range at Fresh Meadow Golf Club in Hillside, just north of Lyons Township. If you have plans for the warm days ahead, tell us in the comments!
