Photo Gallery: A Sampling of the Classics

Members of the Western Springs Music Club display their mastery.

Western Springs Music Club president Peggy Barber opened with an introduction: "We thank you for joining us to celebrate our 91 years of existence. And, for the record, there are no charter members here."

What followed Sunday at the First Congregational Church was an artful display of mastery by the club's members.

James Winfield, who once played the organ at the church, opened the sampler with the first song he ever played there, "Cortege et Litanie" by Marcel Dupre. "It shows off the beauty of the organ," he said.

Celeste Martino then performed a piece from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor," a dramma tragico which places an unfortunate woman, Lucia, between her family and the family Ravenswood. The aria is entitled "Spargi d' Amaro Pianto."

Margaret Hilgendorf followed with "Puck" by Edward Grieg, a light-hearted tune that was a contrast to the tragic tale of Lucia.

A trio of musicians, Nola Gustafson on the piano, Marion Soukup on the violin and Dorothy Lund on the cello, played a selecton from Beethoven's Opus 1, "Trio in E Flat Major." Lund was magnificent on the cello, Soukup showed mastery on the violin and Gustafson paced the set with ease.

Martino returned to perform a piece by Johann Strauss. "Because I love my hometown of Western Springs I will sing 'Csardas,' which speaks well of one's hometown," he said.
