Community Corner
MayFest Comes to Western Springs
Society (WSHS), presents
an afternoon of old-fashioned family fun during MayFest, a new biennial event
designed to raise awareness of the Society and its Preservation Awards. The
event will take place Sunday, May 4, 2-5pm at the Tower Green. “This event is not a fundraiser,” said WSHS President, Vicki Lezon, “but rather a historical “fun fair” for the residents of our great town.” Lezon’s research for a recent lecture revealed the town used to celebrate May Day. With more residents who are new to the area, this new event is designed to highlight the Village of Western Springs and its community spirit.
The afternoon will feature traditional carnival games, old-fashioned entertainment, food and crafts. Carnival games will include nostalgic favorites like the milk can toss, bucket drop and a scavenger hunt with a raffle prize. Entertainment will feature a juggler, unicyclists, Maypole dancers, and the Western Springs-based Allegro fiddle and dance ensemble. Food will include lemonade, popcorn, cotton candy and an old-fashioned candy table. Craft tables will offer boys and girls the opportunity to create crafts from another time, like May baskets, crowns and pennants. Children ages preschool through grade 4 can participate in a coloring contest (details to follow on http://www.westernspringshistory.org.) Entertainment is free, and tickets for food, crafts and games can be purchased at the event.
Community businesses have chipped in
to support the event and include: Event Sponsor: Realty Executives. Activity
