A Mom’s Story – You will want to read this!

Let's all slow down and pay attention to our driving habits to protect all of us especially our children.

Last summer, my older son was riding his bike on a beautiful summer day - happy one second and in real danger the next.  A car backing out of the driveway hit him.  His injuries were minor, but needless to say we all knew how lucky we were that day.

Yesterday, my younger son was riding his bicycle to school.  Yes, you guessed it; a car backing out of its driveway hit him.  His injuries were also minor and he is doing fine.

As their mother I was majorly traumatized by these 2 separate incidents.  I asked myself how could this happen twice to the same family.  Was I doing something wrong in teaching safety to my sons; I didn’t think so.  I had a sense that I was supposed to tell this story but was a bit afraid to open up publicly.  As I drove my son to school this morning and witnessed 3 drivers in our school zone texting, emailing and talking on the phone I knew that I needed to tell this story.

This is a story about all of us myself included.  We all need a reminder about the biggest purpose we have as adults and that is to keep our children safe.  None of us would ever be careless with the safety of our children but we forget that these habits do exactly that.

I am reaching out to everyone to stop and think about our driving.  This story is not about cell phones, texting, or talking on the phone; it is a story about the constant rush of our daily lives and how much it distracts us from the moment that we are living.

Driving is a moment-by-moment activity.  We need to give it that attention to keep us all safe especially our children.  Thanks for listening and be safe!!
