Holiday Home Safety Tips & Helpful Links

Despite our collective efforts to make time stand still--or maybe just slow down a bit-- it's Christmas already.

This means we'll all be attending parties, family gatherings, and some of us will even leave town.

Don't forget there are a few free services you can take advantage of to secure your home and belongings while you are away:

1. Security check. The WSPD (Western Springs Police Department) will walk around your home and suggest ways to secure your property. When you contact them, make sure to call the non-emergency number at 708-246-8540.

2. Vacation home visits. Leaving town? You can also request the WSPD check on your home while you are away. There is an online form that makes it all easy. http://www.wsprings.com/departments/vacationwatch_form.asp

3. Mail hold. The USPS will hold your mail for you per your instructions. Here is the link: https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/

Other items for your checklist:

Even if you don't have a regular service, arrange for snow removal while you are out of town. It makes your home look occupied and is a courtesy to your neighbors.

Stop your newspapers. Try not to rely on your neighbors--they can be forgetful during this busy time of year.

Never leave appliances running when you leave your home--they can be a fire hazard. My own house nearly burned down when my recalled dishwasher burst into flames in the early morning hours.

Be a good neighbor. If you know a friend or neighbor is out of town, lend a hand and make sure their house looks cared for while they're away.

Once you take care of the details, you'll have a happy, healthy and worry-free holiday season.
