2 Western Springs Burglaries Reported on Same Day

One of the incidents was a break-in that took place while no one was home, and the other was a ruse-entry burglary that targeted an elderly resident.

Two burglaries were reported in Western Springs on the night of Nov. 13, one a break-in and the other a ruse-entry burglary.

At 6:17 p.m., a resident from the 4100 block of Ellington Avenue reported that some time while the home was unoccupied between 8:45 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. an unknown person forced entry through a rear door and stole jewelry and a computer device worth a combined $4,000, police said.

Then, at 10:04 p.m., a resident from the 4500 block of Clausen Avenue reported to police a ruse-entry burglary that took place at around 3:30 p.m.

Police said several pieces of jewelry of an undetermined value were reportedly missing after an unknown male posing as an employee of an electric company told the elderly resident he needed to check that their interior lighting was working properly, entered the home, and walked through with the resident.

An investigation turned up evidence suggesting at least one other accomplice entered the home and took the jewelry while the first subject distracted the resident.

The man who posed as an electric employee is described as a 6-foot-2, heavy-set white male wearing a black shirt, jeans, sunglasses and ball cap.

Western Springs police are not able to confirm that the burglaries are connected.
