La Grange Police Announce First Drug Take-Back Day

The program, which has been successful in neighboring towns like Western Springs, now comes to La Grange, which has sorely needed it, the Department said.

The La Grange Police Department is getting on board with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s ever-increasingly popular National Take-Back Initiative to reclaim and safely dispose of prescription medication, and have scheduled their first turn-in date for Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Sgt. Tom Cimbalista of the Department said that the demand for such a program—which has been successfully implemented in both Western Springs and La Grange Park over the past year or so—has been tremendous in La Grange.

“I was constantly getting phone calls from residents asking, ‘where do I dispose of this [medication]?’” said Cimbalista, who added that the Department is already sitting on 100 pounds of reclaimed prescription drugs that it needs to get rid of. “It’s about time we did this.”

Discarded prescription medication could end up in the water supply or harming animals or children, Cimbalista said—the Take-Back Initiative provides a secure alternative method to the trash bit or toilet for disposal.

Any type of (legal) pills and capsules are accepted, and the process is anonymouss—no questions asked. Liquids, injectibles and syringes, however, cannot be taken.

Cimbalista also added that if residents can’t make the specific date and time, they would likely be welcome to drop off their medicines any time during the week as well.

The Take Back Day is Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the La Grange Police Department.
