New Pedestrian Crosswalk Signal Damaged in Accident

An accident at Ogden Avenue and Woodland Avenue on Aug. 11 damaged the village's new crosswalk signal.

Western Springs police reported that an accident on Aug. 11 has damaged the village's new crossing signal between Bemis Woods and Western Springs.

The accident occurred when a vehicle struck a stopped car near Woodland and Ogden Avenues at about 2:56 p.m. After striking the stopped vehicle, the at fault vehicle continued off the roadway and struck the signal, located on the south side of the parkway on Ogden Avenue, and damaged it.

noted the accident had nothing to do with the village's new enhanced crosswalk and safety signal.

No one was injured in the accident, but two citations were issued to the driver at fault in the accident.

But was the car stopped for the crossing? While the intentions for a safer cross walk are good, there seems to be an increased risk to motorists being rear-ended and trusting pedestrians being hit. Are there other locations in the area where these types of crossings are used for 4 lanes of traffic to stop? I think safety concerns are very valid and should be addressed before re-activating this crossing.

Hey Dell, From what I understand, the car was stopped so it could turn into the parking area at that location. The village also said it is addressing safety concerns with a Youtube video. Whether that will help could be the subject of some debate.
