'Just Arrest Me,' Beef-Sandwich Covered Driver Tells Police

Police charged Leo Ortiz, 29, of Riverside with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane use and disobeying a stop sign around 3:15 a.m. Friday, July 12.

Police stopped Ortiz, who was swerving on Homestead and ran a stop sign at the intersection of Homestead Avenue and 26th Street, police said. 

Ortiz, who had a beef sandwich all over the front of his shirt and in the front seat of his car, told police, “Just arrest me… I know you are going to arrest me, so just do it,” police said.

He was given an Aug. 14 court date and released on bond.

LA GRANGE

Telemarketer Will do Anything to Sell Seal-Coating

A person got a phone call on July 10 while in the 0-99 block of South La Grange Road from someone trying to sell seal-coating, police said. The telemarketer called back after his pitch was refused and threatened the person, police said.

OAK PARK

No News Here

Three newspaper boxes were stolen from Oak Park locations between July 5 and July 7. 

Someone stole the blue Chicago Sun-Times newspaper box on the sidewalk in the 100 block of North Marion Street between 4:30 a.m. July 6 and 4:30 a.m. July 7. The total estimated loss is $675, police said. 

In a second location, someone stole the red Red Eye newspaper box and the white Hoy newspaper box from the sidewalk in the 700 block of South Austin Boulevard between 4:30 a.m. July 5 and 4:30 a.m. July 6. The total estimated loss is $900, police said. 

Frog Statue Stolen

Someone stole a $750 frog statue from the front steps of a building in the 1100 block of Randolph Street between 7 and 9:30 a.m. July 12.

$800 Bottle of Liquor Stolen

Someone used a brick to break a car window in the 800 block of South Kenilworth Avenue and stole an $800 bottle of liquor and a 1950s dollar bill between 10:30 p.m. July 10 and 7:40 a.m. July 11. The total estimated loss is $1,036. 

Thief Gets New Wardrobe

Someone stole two colorful tank tops, three pairs of leggings, a blouse and a dress from a UPS package in the 400 block of South Ridgeland Avenue between about noon and 7 p.m. July 12. The total estimated loss is $132, police said. 

RIVER FOREST

Cops Wake the Beast

Eric Caine, 47, of the 1500 block of Bonnie Brae Street in River Forest was arrested for aggravated assault and resisting after he tried to punch an officer around 3 a.m. July 15. Police said officers stopped a suspicious vehicle parked illegally in the 1500 block of Bonnie Brae, in which the driver and passenger, Caine, seemed to be asleep. 

Police said after the driver told police he had been drinking and would leave the car overnight, Caine got out of the car and tried to run at an officer and strike him with a clenched fist.
