Sex Offender Arrested in McClure Junior High

Western Springs police arrested Dean A. Quarino on Saturday for felony presence within a school after Quarino was found playing basketball in the McClure gym.

After locating a 48-year-old male registered sex offender playing basketball in the gymnasium on Saturday morning, Western Springs police arrested the man on Class 4 felony charges of unlawful presence within a school.

Dean A. Quarino, of 3516 Hollywood Ave., Brookfield, was discovered at 7:50 a.m. with several other men in the gym as a part of a basketball group renting the space from McClure. His presence was in felony violation of the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act.

Quarino (known alias Qaurino) is classified as a “sexual predator” by the State of Illinois. He was convicted in 2001 of aggravated criminal sex abuse on a 17-year-old victim, in his first year as the Maine East High School varsity basketball coach.

“In order to comply with the Act, he would have had to receive explicit permission to be in a school for an event such as this,” said Western Springs Deputy Chief of Police Brian Budds. “He knew that, and he did not do that.”

Police located Quarino after running random registration checks on vehicles legally parked on the road outside of McClure. After one of the checks brought up Quarino’s name, police investigated the building and apprehended him.

A Class 4 felony is the lowest classification of felony in Illinois, one step above the highest class of misdemeanor. It carries a penalty of 1-3 years in state prison and/or fines of up to $25,000.

Budds said Quarino’s only intent in being in the building was to play basketball, but that did not excuse the crime.

“We don’t feel that this person is a danger to the community, especially after he’s been arrested,” Budds said. “[But] he’s going to be prosecuted to the limit of the law."

Quarino was taken to the Cook County Central Bond Court for a Sunday bond hearing.
