The Western Springs Police Department has issued a community alert warning for residents to beware a scammer or scammers calling residents of Western Springs to solicit "donations" for the "Drug Enforcement Unit" of the "Western Springs Crime Commission."
"Neither the Village of Western Springs nor the Western Springs Police Dpeartment has any such sanctioned Crime Commission or Drug Enforcement Unit," wrote Deputy Chief Brian Budds in the alert, adding that the Police Department will never fundraise by telephone.
The calls were placed on Monday, Feb. 21, in the early evening, and targeted several Western Springs residents. A criminal investigation is ongoing.
