It's Earth Week at Lyons Township

The LTHS Recycling Club is celebrating a week of green-consciousness with several recycling- and reusing- themed events.

This week at , the Recycling Club is hosting three events to increase green awareness, forward environmentally-friendly living, and promote their "reduce, reuse and recycle" mantra.

First is a weeklong Recycled Art Contest, in which students are encouraged to submit art promoting the aformentioned Three-R cause, using at least 75 percent recycled material. (Example entires can be seen to the right.) Winning submissions will be played on display at the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce/LTHS Computer Recycling Drive on May 19 (South Campus, 9 a.m.-noon.)

Second, the Club will be hosting a swap-fest "Trading Post" event in which students are encouraged to bring to school items of some worth that they no longer want and trade them for "Earth Bucks;" on Wednesday, students can redeem their "Earth Bucks" for their peers' traded-in stuff (like books, CDs, DVDs and T-shirts.)

Third and finally, the Recycling Club (and any interested volunteers) will be visiting McCormick Woods in North Riverside on Sunday (Earth Day) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to cull invasive plant species like garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata.)
