LT Class of 2011’s ACT Scores Match Highest Ever

Across the board, the Class of 2011's scores parallel the high standard set by the Class of 2009.

The Class of 2011 at  has tied with the Class of 2009 for highest scores in school history in nearly every category of the ACT assessment test.

As usual, LT’s scores also smashed both the state and national averages, as well as showing a full one-point improvement in students’ average score since 2005. Except for a slight downward bump in 2010, the school’s composite score has increased each of the past six years.

Lyons Township’s average composite score was 24.1, equaling the school record set by the Class of 2009. In 2005, the school’s average composite was 23.1.

The Class of 2011 also matched the grads of two years ago in math (24.4), reading (24.0) and science (25.5), all school records. Only the average English score fell a near-negligible tenth of a point short of the record, at 24.0.

“We’re quite pleased with the results, and it just demonstrates that people expect LT to deliver a quality education, and our kids demonstrate that on this measure,” said District 204 Superintendent Tim Kilrea.

The state average for ACT scores is only 20.9; the national average is 21.1. The test, a common Midwestern alternative to the SATs for college admissions, is scored on a scale of 1 to 36.

“[The ACT] is definitely something that we need to pay attention to, because of the proportion of our students who go on to four-year schools after leaving LT,” said Kilrea. “Our desire is always to increase our student achievement, and we’re always pushing for that.
