LT to Host Special Education Forum Jan. 14

Illinois State Board of Education to review special education at LT next week, with forum planned for parents of students with disabilities Tuesday, Jan. 14.

From Lyons Township High School:

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) will be at LT on Jan. 14-17 for a Focus Monitoring on-site visit to review of federal and state special educational regulations, procedures and practices aimed at improving education results and outcomes for all students with disabilities.

According to Lyons Township's website, focused monitoring uses a data-driven approach to pinpoint a small number of carefully chosen priorities that have demonstrated the greatest impact on improving results for students with disabilities.

The on-site visit consists of meetings with the district team, a public forum, IEP file reviews, and interviews of select staff and administration. The ISBE collects and reviews data submitted by the district, and at the conclusion of the visit, identifies any issues of noncompliance and initiates an improvement/corrective action process. The District will then develop an improvement plan to address and correct the identified findings of noncompliance.

One of the first activities to be conducted is a public forum for parents of students with disabilities and community stakeholders. The purpose of this forum is to solicit information about how educational placement decisions are made for students with disabilities.

Parents of students with disabilities are invited to the forum on Tuesday, January 14, at 6pm in the South Campus Performing Arts Center.
