Lyons Township Sets Record for AP Students
Seven hundred LT students took 1,405 AP tests in 2013, and 93 percent of those tests received a passing score.
The number of Lyons Township High School students who took an AP course last school year was the highest in the school's history, according to Lyons Township High School District 204 director of curriculum and instruction Scott Eggerding.
In the spring of 2013, 700 AP students combined to take a total of 1,405 AP tests according to Eggerding's 2012-13 student performance report presented at Monday night's District 204 Board of Education meeting.
Those numbers are up from 634 students and 1,238 tests last year in 2012, 587 students and 1,118 tests five years ago in 2008, and 380 students and 753 tests 10 years ago in 2003.
Of the 1,405 tests taken by LT students in 2013, 93 percent received a passing score of 3, 4 or 5. That number is down slightly from 2012, when a school-record 94 percent received a 3 or above, but up from 91 percent five years ago and 89 percent 10 years ago, even with the increase in total tests taken.
"We’ve had really a tremendous growth in our AP program over the last few years," Eggerding said. "I think it is an indicator of a change in philosophy of openness and [of] bringing more students into our AP program."
The percentage of tests that received a 5 (37 percent) was higher than any other score. Thirty-four percent of tests received a 4, 23 percent received a 3, 6 percent received a 2, and 1 percent received a 1.
