Little League 11-Year-Olds Win Districts, First Sectional, in Routs

Building on last year's District championship as 10-year-olds, Western Springs' 11-year-old team is breezing past opponents as they claimed the District title and more.

The Western Springs Little League 11-Year-Old District All-Star team swept Sunday’s District tournament—against teams from La Grange, La Grange Park, Lyons Township, Brookfield and Riverside—to advance to sectionals, where they also claimed a win in their first game on Friday.

In the weekend’s tournament, the team first beat La Grange Park by 6-0, then won twice consecutively over old nemesis Riverside, 15-4 and 9-4. (As 10-year-olds last year, the team had to .)

On Friday night, representing District 9 in the sectional tournament in Hinsdale, the Village boys put a 13-0 four-inning slaughter-rule hurting on Burbank. They challenge Naperville on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Hinsdale.

“We have wonderful pitching, the team plays defense very well and we seem to get the hits when we have guys on base,” said team manager Bob Waunn. “It’s a very balanced team. We don’t rely strictly on offense or defense or pitching—it’s a combination of all that.”

The team is Daniel Feldmeier, Dominic Fera, Andrew Gatland, Jack Hammond, Sam Hojnar, Nolan Niego, Nick Panos, Thomas Remijas, Stone Saloum, Graham Sands, Eric Steensma and Owen Waunn, with manager Bob Waunn and coaches Dean Panos and Jon Remijas.
