As usual, First Congregational Church saw a massive turnout from far and wide for the whopping discounts at its annual enormous outreach fundraiser.

The spring edition of the biannual Woman's Society Rummage Sale opened on Tuesday evening, and cars lined the streets of Western Springs as far as the eye could see.

The immensely popular event dates back to the Depression, when funds were used to support parishoners who had fallen upon tough times. Today, the proceeds from the items (all donated by members and friends of the church) go towards outreach programs locally, regionally and nationally.

"It's amazing, some of the stuff we get," said Terri Lane, one of the event's organizers (items range from furniture to children's toys to sporting equipment and everything in between.) "It's surprising how much volume we get, and how much [money] we bring in!"

Shoppers come from far beyond the boundaries of Western Springs in all directions. Members of the Plymouth Fellowship youth group and Boy Scout Troop 12 were on hand to assist them, along with First Congregational staff and members.

The sale continues on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and then from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with increased discounts on remaining merchandise.
