Western Springs' largest church is also the village's largest employer. St. John of the Cross was founded in 1960 and named after the 16th-century Spanish Carmelite saint renowned for holiness in the face of extreme adversity. The church is a major player in the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. Several masses are held on both Saturday and Sunday in the central church and sanctuary, which rests in a building adjacent to and separate from offices, meeting spaces and the church parish. The church building is designed by renowned church architect Edward D. Dart.

SJC's outreach programs reach everything from a Chicago prison to an African ministry, and a monthly food and supplies drive is held to support area food pantries. The church hosts about 50 groups in more than 35 categories, offering various opportunities for spiritual development and social interaction. Events are held almost every day somewhere on the large campus, which also includes St. John of the Cross Parish School, a Catholic elementary/middle school directly affiliated with the church. Rev. David P. Dowdle is the current pastor; Rev. Ken Baker and Rev. Darrio Boscutti are Associate Pastors.
