Western Springs PD Ready, 'Just In Case' During NATO Summit

Suburban police departments have been working together planning and training for several months preparing for anything unexpected that might happen in the suburbs relating to the NATO Summit in Chicago this weekend.

As the city of Chicago braces for the protesters and worldwide visitors attending the NATO Summit this weekend, the suburban police departments, particularly those along the commuter train lines, have been training to be prepared for the unexpected.  Deputy Chief of Police Brian Budds wanted to make clear that there is no specific intelligence or information to suggest there's anything to worry about in Western Springs.  "It's a complex situation," he said. "The local suburban [police] departments are prepared. So we're ready. We have no reason to believe anything will happen, but failing to prepare is preparing to fail as I say." Budds said the business association and local banks, especially those in the central business district, have …

Deputy Chief Budds is warning us about "potential problems from protesters or anyone from the Occupy movements." That's funny, I didn't think someone being a "protester" or being part of the "Occupy" movement made them a "potential problem" or threat any more than being a banker makes a person a crook. However, if vomit and incoherent shouting are problems, perhaps Budds should begin warning …   more ›

Jeff Ward: DuPage County Needs to Do Some Political House Cleaning

Ah! But my esteemed Kane Countians get to take the week off!

My fine Kane County compatriots! You’ve done well. Political perfection may be a pipe dream, but I have to say that things are looking a little better out here because of your recent voting proclivities. The sheriff who thought he was king is long gone and Pat Perez has done a phenomenal job in his place. In fact, he’s done so well that I’ve been encouraging him to consider a third term. You might want to do the same thing. Once stripped of her County Board cronies, Chairman Karen McConnaughay fled for Springfield faster than a Rush Limbaugh advertiser jumped ship. She’ll do far less damage down there and fit in perfectly with that group of ineffectual state senators. You saw right through Cathy Hurlbutt’s court clerk makeover attempt, you…

I just happened upon your piece when it triggered my email alert on Joe Birkett's name. You're right on about DuPage County, but I'd like to add that that the fear factor plays a large role in the state's attorney and sheriff's elections. The vindictive and malicious nature of John Zaruba and Joe Birkett, and their willingness to abuse their power has kept candidates from opposing them in …   more ›

Police Blotter: Landscape Trailer Burglary Still Under Investigation

The Western Springs incident appears to be an isolated one, after a string of similar burglaries in surrounding towns.

Western Springs police are still investigating the theft of $900 worth of equipment that was reported stolen from an unlocked landscaping trailer on April 23 while it was parked in the 4500 block of Grand Avenue. Area police were comparing notes after a string of similar robberies involving landscaping trailers were reported in Clarendon Hills on April 26 and in Hinsdale on April 20 and May 8. (See Patch story)    Deputy Chief Brian Budds said the incident continues to be investigated, but that the Western Springs incident does not appear to indicate a trend.  "It's an ongoing investigation," Budds said. "I'm aware that some surrounding towns had some similar ones (landscape trailer burglaries)." "The Western Springs incident seems to be …
