Basketball squad moves to 2-0 following
71-37 rout of Argo, meets Fenwick tomorrow
Two nights after Lyons Township's 88-33 romp of Chicago Academy, the La Grange side replicated its dominance in the LT Invitational Tournament with a 71-37 victory over Argo. Lyons senior Eric Powers led all scorers, contributing 17 of his 21 points in the first half. Senior forward Nick Burt and Illinois State University-bound Nick Zeisloft added 13 and nine points, respectively, to augment Powers's scoring outburst. LTHS head Coach Tom Sloan insisted the team's second consecutive beat-down is but a stepping stone in the program's campaign. "Game experience is always very important," Sloan said. "Unless you get good game experience, you don't know what you have going into a game against a really top quality team." And though Argo's 0-2 …

2010 season opener sees Lions dismantle city-side Chicago Academy Cougars with ease.
The Lyons Township boys basketball program got off to a sensational start after annihilating Chicago Academy 88-33 at home in the LT Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament. After dropping out of the 2009-10 IHSA playoffs with a 65-35 shellacking from city-power Simeon at home, the Lions began their 2010-11 campaign by nearly doubling that 30 point deficit at the North Campus fieldhouse Wednesday night. "With the first game it's always good to just get out there," Lyons head Coach Tom Sloan said. "I was very pleased with the guys' mindset of going to the basket every time we got the ball. That aggressive mindset is really what we need." Senior forward Nick Burt agreed the team consciously looked to drive all game. "We did a good job …

LT has only suffered one loss this season; the team faces sectional semifinals at home Tuesday.
One might compare the Lyons Township High School girls volleyball team to the Energizer bunny—it just keeps going and going and going. Saturday, the team handily defeated Reavis High School in two games (25-13, 25-13) to claim its second IHSA regional title in two years. "Taking it one game at a time has helped us to keep winning, because there's no way that you can win the game you're playing if all you're thinking about is what's next," said junior libero Megan Miller. LT leaders included junior Laura Williams, with seven kills, four aces; senior Jocelyn Birks, with seven kills; junior Alexis Viliunas, with four kills, two aces, 14 assists; and senior Kelsey Keeve, with six kills. Although the scoreline showed otherwise, Reavis put up a …

Down one man, one goal with ten minutes
left, ’09 state champs battle back for 2-1 win
It is undeniable that the Lyons Township High School soccer team has some magic in the making in 2010. Friday evening, the 2009 IHSA class 3A state champions displayed such magic in overcoming bitter rival Morton High School in thrilling fashion, 2-1, in the sectional championship. Illinois' No.1 vs. No. 2 matchup, according to the Chicago Tribune's PrepsPlus section, was held at neutral site Argo High School. The match was heavily hyped all week, and by the final whistle, the hype had been justified. "It's LT vs. Morton, and every time those two teams get on the field, something exciting or crazy happens," LT head coach Paul Labbato said. "[Morton] played really well, but our guys finished it up." Morton's 2-1 victory in the Pepsi …

LTHS kicks off IHSA regionals in
style, handily brings Argonauts back to Earth in two games Thursday night.
The IHSA postseason started on a high note for the Lyons Township High School girls volleyball team with a swift, two-game victory over regional hosts Argo High School, 25-7, 25-13. In spite of the dominance exhibited by the La Grange based program Thursday night, senior Erin Juley, who is committed to Long Beach State University, said the team needs to keep progressing forward. "It's important to start the postseason modestly and to approach every game with the same intensity," Juley said. "Realizing that, we need to push ourselves farther in each match." LTHS plays its regional finale against an undetermined opponent at Argo High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday. With its only loss coming late in September to Marist High School, Lyons—ranked…

Lyons claims spot in IHSA Sectional final
after thrilling 2-1 victory.
In high school soccer especially, it is considered a genuine challenge to beat a good program three times in the same season. But on an overwhelmingly windy Tuesday evening, Lyons Township High School bested Downers Grove North High School for the third time in 2010, 2-1, eliminating the Trojans from the IHSA playoffs and booking a spot in Friday's sectional championship against Morton High School. "If you beat a team twice, all that means to is you can beat them a third time," junior co-captain Elliot Borge said. The Lions (21-1-2), who had defeated Downers Grove North (17-5-2) once in West Suburban Silver Conference play and once in the Pepsi Showdown, overcame an organized team effort from a well coached DGN side that looked dangerous …

The Lions battle from behind, advance to sectional round, defeating Thomas Kelly High School 3-1.
Conceding goals early in matches has been a common trend for the Lyons Township High School soccer program. Fighting back to win those matches, however, has also been a common trend for the La Grange based team. After going down 1-0 early on Friday, the Lions responded with three unanswered goals, cruising to a 3-1 victory in the IHSA regional finals over Thomas Kelly High School. The triumph sends Lyons into the sectional semifinal—scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday—against an undetermined opponent. "This has been a hard year, a lot harder than last year," senior midfielder Kyle Kurfirst said. "We knew Kelly was going to be good and it says a lot for our team to go down early but then fight back and take over the rest of the game. It feels …

Defending state champions survive officiating
miscues, win second consecutive WSS title.
In almost any game, there is always somebody that makes an argument about an official's refereeing capabilities, or lack thereof. In Lyons Township High School's 2-1 victory at York Community High School Tuesday night, however, nearly all the spectators were left unhappy with the infrequency of the ref's whistle, allowing for hostility to breed on the field. "For the last three days, we talked about not allowing this [game] to get emotional," Lyons head coach Paul Labbato said. "We're going to try and make sure that it's not us retaliating, and we did a good job of calming down and playing the game out." LT senior goalkeeper Jeremiah Enright attributes to the Lions' composed play to Labbato's example. "[Labbato's] pre-game speech was to …

Conference leaders continue to rack up wins
following hard fought win against Huskies.
In a crucial conference meeting between perennial West Suburban Silver Conference Leaders Lyons Township High School and Oak Park- River Forest High School, the Lions narrowly pulled out a 2-1 victory Thursday evening at Bennet Field, LT's alternate home field, located on 47th street near Garden Market in Western Springs. LTHS travels to Argo High School away from home today, a vital match for the La Grange based team as the Argonauts' field is the site of the 2010 Sectional playoffs. Thursday's win takes LTHS to a 13-1-2 overall record with just three regular season games remaining. Though IHSA post-season seeding has already been determined, head coach Paul Labbato stressed the importance of finishing off the year strongly, beginning …
