La Grange Board Preparing for Chance of Medical Marijuana Shop

The Board took steps towards regulating the placement and operation of such a distribution center if Illinois House Bill 30 comes to pass.

The La Grange Board of Trustees approved a resolution Monday that would revise the Village zoning code to allow and regulate the placement and operation of a medical-marijuana center, The Doings La Grange reports.  According to the paper, House Bill 30, currently moving forward in Springfield, would create a mandatory center in each state senate district—La Grange has three—though bar them from being within 2,500 feet of a school, like most of the La Grange downtown. “This is not an opt-out program,” the paper quoted Trustee Bill Holder saying. “If this bill gets passed, there would be one center per district, so we should definitely be out in front of this.” The board also finalized a program for electrical-aggregation, including an …

Trustees Debate Village Manager's Role in Wake of Fire Department Records Scandal

La Grange Trustee Michael Horvath led a discussion Monday asking for the board's role in reviewing a separation agreement with former Fire Captain Richard Griffin.

It took Trustee Michael Horvath nearly a year to obtain a document detailing a separation agreement between the village of La Grange and Fire Captain Richard Griffin. In the letter, Village Manager Bob Pilipiszyn wrote that a village investigation determined that Griffin falsified department records and lied to La Grange's fire chief, giving the appearance that Griffin intended to manipulate the results of a worker's compensation claim. The village originally denied Horvath's request for the letter, citing privacy concerns, which ultimately led Horvath to go to the Illinois Attorney General's office in order to get the letter released. "I was …

Report: Village Pensions on Solid Financial Ground

Western Spring Trustees receive favorable financial news from accounting firm during the Aug. 27 board meeting.

Western Springs’ three public pension funds are meeting or exceeding funding standards set by actuaries, according to the 2011 comprehensive annual financial report. The report, prepared by Sikich, Gardner & Company, a public accounting firm, was briefly presented to the village board of trustees during Monday night’s board meeting. The three funds used by the village, the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, Police Retirement Fund, and Fireman’s Retirement Fund have funding levels of 71.84 percent, 60.5 percent and 129 percent respectively, said Brian LeFevre, a Sikich representative. According to Pew Center on the States, 80 percent is the funding level most experts agree is fiscally sustainable for a pension system. However, LeFevre said…

Board Meeting: One Oktoberfest Officer is Enough

Trustees approve request for diminished police presence at upcoming 800 West event.

When 800 West restaurant and Scavuzzo's Cafe Italia host their joint Oktoberfest celebration Oct. 8, there will be just one police officer on duty to maintain order. The Western Springs Board of Trustees Tuesday approved a request from the restaurateurs to hire a single officer for the event, rather than the two recommended by the village. It's customary for two officers to cover such events, said Deputy Brian Budds. "If one officer needs to take a break, the other can be there. More importantly, if a disturbance occurs, we like the officers to work in pairs for their safety as well as others'. But Andrew Bobich, 800 West general manager and managing partner, told trustees cost was a consideration for the restaurants, both of which have …
