La Grange Park police report that they have arrested two man involved in a burglary on the 1400 block of Scotdale Road in La Grange Park on Thursday afternoon. Fernando Gonzales, 30, homeless, and Felipe Martinez, 21, of the 2600 block of S. Komensky Avenue, Chicago, were each charged with a Class 1 felony for residential burglary. Police had responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle around 1:00 p.m. According to La Grange Park police, the men were located sitting in a van on the 1600 block of La Grange Road with burglary tools and items from the burglarized house on Scotdale, where a rear door had been pried open. After four burglaries in one week, the Western Springs Police Department has warned residents to exercise caution and be sure to lock up.
The Village of Western Springs saw four burglaries in the past week (since Oct. 7), the Western Springs Police Department is reporting, prompting the Department to issue a community alert. Three of the burglaries were to vehicles and the fourth was to to a residential home. (The three most recent burglaries are enumerated in our most recent Western Springs police blotter; the fourth in the previous week's blotter.) All the burglaries took place in Forest Hills and Ridge Acres neighborhoods of Western Springs. UPDATE 1:30 p.m.: According to La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub, bond was set at $250,000 for Jack Smith Jr. and $350,000 for Michael A. Bass this morning. 9 a.m. La Grange police announced this morning that they have arrested and charged two men in connection with multiple burglaries in La Grange. Michael A. Bass, 50, of Calumet City and Jack Smith Jr., 46, of Romeoville, were each charged with residential burglary; possession of burglary tools; two counts of criminal trespass to a residence; and two counts of criminal damage to property. A burglary alarm was tripped at the home, near the pedestrian footbridge across I-294; police say they have “valuable evidence” in-hand.
At 4:39 a.m. Sunday morning, someone unsuccessfully attempted to break into the basement of a vacant home on the 4000 block of Western Avenue, the Western Springs Police Department has announced. Police received a call when the home’s burglar alarm was tripped, and arrived to find that a basement window on the south side of the home had been pried free. They were able to confirm that the burglar was unable to enter the home. The residents of the home were on vacation at the time of the burglary attempt. Friends who knew Kelli O'Laughlin since kindergarten will miss her.
About a dozen Lyons Township High School freshmen tied white ribbons around trees in front of the school in Western Springs Friday afternoon. "They're white, because white is pure, just like Kelli," said Abby, a friend of fellow freshman Kelli O'Laughlin, 14, who was murdered after getting home from school on Thursday. The group of students are remembering Kelli by putting together scrapbooks of their times together, and a memorial Facebook page has been created. Most of the students had gone to school with Kelli since kindergarten and several were on the cross country team with her. Friday afternoon, they wore purple ribbons around their heads.
