Thank You. Two small words, but they mean so much to us. Since our beautiful girl with the radiant, contagious smile was taken from us last fall, people have astounded us with their thoughtfulness and generosity in Kelli’s name. Kelli’s name is, in fact, now inextricably linked with those willing to help others in some way. It is fitting that so many people—of all ages, literally all over the world—have come together to not only support our family, but to raise funds so that others many benefit. After all, our Kelli Joy was always helping others, whether teaching and playing with children, giving her time and talent to schools, teams and clubs or simply asking someone sitting alone at a nearby lunch table to come join her and her friends. …

The community of Indian Head Park has issued a proclamation that her birthday will be celebrated every year as a memorial day to the slain teen starting today.
At 3 p.m. today, residents of the community of Indian Head Park will observe one minute of silence in memory of Kelli O'Laughlin, who was brutally murdered in her own home last October. On what would have been her 15th birthday, the community has designated today and every April 2 going forward, Kelli Joy O'Laughlin Memorial Day. A proclamation dated March 8 and signed by Indian Head Park Mayor Richard S. Andrews stated in part, "Whereas Kelli Joy exhibited a vivacious personality, love of life and concern for others as exemplifiied by her infectious joy and sparkling smile, and had dreams of using her God-given talents someday as a pediatrician or school teacher; and whereas Kelli Joy was lost to us before she could achieve the promise of…

The Illinois State Board of Elections ruled that Radogno's challenger did not have enough signatures on his nominating petition to run in the March primary.
Lemont resident Duane Bradley has been removed from the March 20 Republican primary ballot for the 41st Senate district, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. In a hearing held Monday morning in Chicago, the Illinois State Officers Electoral Board sustained an objection filed Dec. 9 by Homer Township Highway Commissioner Michael DeVivo against Bradley's nominating petition, according to the state board's website. The objection claimed Bradley had only 300 of the required 1,000 signatures before the Dec. 5 filing deadline, according to Rupert Borgsmiller, executive director of the Illinois State Board of Elections. A hearing examiner reviewed DeVivo's objection before submitting a recommendation to the state's General Counsel…

John L. Wilson, Jr., the man charged with the murder of a Lyons Township teen, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. At his arraignment Wednesday morning, Wilson's attorney made a third petition to have Wilson remanded to the custody of the Cook County Sheriff's Office. Wilson is currently being held at the Pontiac Correctional Facility, located about 100 miles south of Chicago on I-55. His attorney, Naperville-based John Paul Carroll, said the distance to the correctional facility and the procedures that must be followed, make it difficult for him to talk to his client. "It is very difficult for me to mount a defense in this case," Carroll said in court Wednesday. "I have never experienced representing a person charged with …

For nearly 20 years, a local non-profit has been helping to make Christmases for financially struggling families a little brighter. Toy Express, an organization that serves Chicago's western suburbs, collects new, unwrapped gifts at local fire departments to be offered to families on financial assistance in DuPage County. Fire departments serve as drop off points for the presents, which are then collected and brought to a donated storefront. Parents can then make appointments to come to the store to pick out toys for their kids. "From the very beginning, they thought families would be interested in being able to choose from the gifts donated—whatever sparked interest in their little one," said Cindy Bokhart, who, along with her husband, …

A fundraiser will be held tonight at Mattone Restaurant and Bar in La Grange Park to raise money for the Kelli Joy O'Laughlin Memorial Fund. The 14-year-old Lyons Township freshman was killed after she walked in on a burglary in her own home last month. Forty-six area businesses have donated items that will be raffled off to raise money for the fund that has been set up in her memory. "Everybody that we've talked to about participating with a donation has been happy and eager to be a part of the event," said Erica Alletto, one of the coordinators for the fundraiser. Alletto's brother Johnny and her husband Frank, Lyons Township High School graduates and members of the Acoustic-rock cover band Jank, were scheduled to play at Mattone …

George Orwell was right!
All that whooping and hollering you just heard was me! I couldn’t help but get a little excited over Houston, TX, removing every last one of its 70 red-light cameras. Despite a despicable legal attack and being outspent 10-to-1, a citizen’s group started by two brothers got the removal measure on the ballot and then prevailed. Not one to admit defeat, the camera company tried a last-ditch legal end run and, when the city council wouldn’t buckle, sued Houston for $25 million. It’s all about safety, isn’t it! That second round of loud applause you heard was also me. After calling every single West Suburban Patch police department, I was astonished to find that only four cities—Geneva, St. Charles, Lisle and Western Springs—employ the heinous…

Sox Training Camp for baseball players and Little Sluggers Camp continue this week at Harvester Park.
Ten-year-old Jenna So of Darien already has played softball for about six years. She still came away feeling that she made progress as a player thanks to attending last week’s White Sox Academy Fastpitch Camp July 18-22 at Harvester Park in Burr Ridge. “(I’ve learned) you really should call the ball and catch with two hands,” So said. “It’s good. (We’ve been) hitting, catching and pitching. The coaches are awesome. They’re just a lot of fun.” The camp may have been fun, but there was plenty of instruction as well. Besides lead camp instructor Breann Schuh, there were three other coaches during the week providing specific instruction on pitching, catching, hitting, fielding and baserunning. “I like to make sure the girls are doing all of …
