Facing a quarter-point deficit entering their final day of state competition, the Lyons Township girls’ gymnastics team rode improved balance-beam performances by Katie Carling and Michelle Cozza to take their first-ever Illinois state championship on Saturday, the Daily Herald reports. The win was capped for the Lions, the paper said, by sophomore Kelsy Kurfirst’s 9.725 floor routine, which won her a first-place title along with second place in vault, second in all-around and a T-3 on balance beam. "We were excited coming into today, not really knowing what to expect," Kurfirst told the Herald. "We knew we had the potential to do something big and we did it." Four Lions girls automatically qualified on Wednesday for this week's state meet as the team did collectively as well.
Led by individual-qualifying efforts from Kelsy Kurfirst, Michelle Cozza, Maren Craig and Katie Carling, the Lyons Township High School girls gymnastics team secured the sectional championship and a spot in this weekend's state meet in Palatine, the Suburban Life reports. According to the paper, Kurfirst took some risks to emerge with the highest all-around score (38.35) as LT cruised over second-place Hinsdale Central, 149.25 to 140.90. "Every single girl was just amazing tonight,” Lions coach Kari Karubas told the paper on Wedneday. “I know exactly what needs to happen (at state). I’m not one of those coaches that backs off.
