Squad aspires to match ’09 season success,
improve IHSA postseason prospects.
In 2009, the Lyons Township boys basketball team dominated in the regular season, going 24-1 on the way to a West Suburban Silver Conference title. But high postseason hopes were shattered in the sectional semifinal, as the squad dropped out of the tournament with a 65-35 home dismantling by Simeon. "After that game it gave us a hunger to prove ourselves and show that we can hang with some of the best teams in the state," senior guard Spencer Mahoney said. "We know we can play better than what we showed, so this is the year to prove it." The Lions will get their first shot at proving themselves against Chicago Academy in the LT Invitational Tournament on Wednesday, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mahoney, who committed to Valparaiso …

Veteran roster holds potential, looks to
improve on sub-par '09 season.
Coming off a disappointing 9-19 record in the 2009-10 season, the Lyons Township girls basketball team is prepared to make new strides in order to improve upon the sub-par campaign from a year ago. Lyons—led by newcomer head coach Katie Meyers— opens its season in the LT Invitational Tournament on Friday at the South Campus gymnasium with a tip set for 6:30 p.m. LTHS competes in a traditionally strong West Suburban Silver Conference, in which they finished in the bottom half in 2009-10. However, the squad is already able to tout a unique work ethic early in the preseason. Meyers responded to Patch via e-mail. "We have an incredibly athletic and eager group of juniors and seniors who are willing to run through a brick wall to get better," …

LT volleyball advances to IHSA class 3A state
semifinals after two-game victory over Marist on today.
When the Lyons Township volleyball team found out it would face Marist in the super-sectional round of the 2010 IHSA postseason, the entire squad got pumped up. "We knew we needed to bring our A-game," senior Erin Juley said. "But against Marist, it was time for revenge." And on Saturday at Thornton Fractional South High School, LTHS exacted such revenge, eliminating Marist—the Chicago Tribune PrepsPlus section's No. 2 ranked team in Illinois—in the super-sectionals, (25-21, 25-10). Lyons moves on to the class 4A state semifinals versus York at Illinois State University—which would send the Lions into their second consecutive state finals appearance. "It feels awesome, I'm so excited," senior Julia Watkins said. "We were really pumped up…

The 10-1 Lyons football team battles back in front of capacity crowd, advances to class 8A quarterfinals.
"I want to thank all the fans, really," Lyons Township junior running back Jaime Jones said. "The support they give us is a really big part of our success. Hearing them in the stands is always a kick start to our adrenaline." Jones, along with the entire LTHS football team, fueled off of strong fan support in the Lions' second round home playoff victory over Carl Sandburg High School, 21-20. With temperatures hovering around freezing, dedicated LT faithful saw their team grind out its tenth win of the season to advance to the IHSA class 8A quarterfinal game next week against powerhouse Mount Carmel, ranked No. 7 by the Chicago Tribune's PrepsPlus section going into the playoffs. "This win is great for the program," two way senior starter …

As winter athletics begin tryouts, here’s a
look at how fall sports are concluding at LT.
Boys soccer- The varsity team dropped out of the IHSA postseason in the super-sectional round, ending its 2010 campaign with a 22-2-2 record. The 3-2 double OT defeat to Naperville North means the program falls one match short of a second consecutive appearance in the IHSA final four. But with nearly half of its players set to return in 2011, including top prospect Elliot Borge, soccer's potential remains high for the future. Girls volleyball- The lady Lions are alive and kicking, advancing to the super-sectional round of the playoffs with a home victory last night over St. Ignatius. Lyons (38-1), which was ranked No. 3 in state by the Chicago Tribune PrepsPlus section going into the postseason, face a tough test against Marist Saturday …

Lady Lions beat St. Ignatius at home but must
leapfrog No. 2 ranked Marist for shot at state.
The Lyons Township High School volleyball team is one step closer to an IHSA final four berth after defeating St. Ignatius College Prep at home in two games, 25-13, 25-17 last night. The team improves to a sparkling 38-1 overall record and is set to face Marist High School—the sole team that has found success against the 2010 Lions—in the super-sectional round at Thornton Fractional South High School Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. "We came out strong and were very consistent," LT head coach Joann Pyritz said. "In the second game we took a little bit of a mental break, and give [St. Ignatius] credit, they kept pushing and pushing. I'm pleased we finished the match in two games and it's always good when you can win a match in two and not have…

IHSA roller coaster ride ends for the Lions
in super-sectional with 3-2 double OT loss.
All good things must come to an end, so they say, but for the Lyons Township High School soccer team and fans, the end was utterly agonizing. The team was eliminated from the IHSA playoffs at the hands of Naperville North High School, 3-2 in double overtime, one game before the state semifinal. The defending Illinois state champions' season ends after being ranked 6th in the nation by ESPNrise.com on Oct. 31. "We knew coming in that they were the same team as us," LT head coach Paul Labbato said. "They outworked us in some areas, they put pressure on our [defense]. They were pressing and pressing and pressing, and hats off to them." The match was held on the Lions' arch-rival—Hinsdale Central High School's—home field, and was an absolute …

Home atmosphere serves LT well as girls squad dominates third straight IHSA playoff match.
The Lyons Township High School volleyball team enjoys playing at home—their play Tuesday night made that evident. The squad overcame conference opponent Oak Park-River Forest High School in two games (25-10, 25-11) to advance to the IHSA Lyons sectional final on Thursday, where they are to face St. Ignatius College Prep, which was also successful Tuesday night, beating De La Salle Institute (25-21, 25-13). "We had energy behind us tonight because we had some fans," LT junior standout Alexis Viliunas said. "Since we know our surroundings on the court, it was a lot easier to adjust to the things happening around us." In yet another straightforward match for Lyons—coached by Joann Pyritz—the team looked skilled in all facets of its game, …

LT has only suffered one loss this season; the team faces sectional semifinals at home Tuesday.
One might compare the Lyons Township High School girls volleyball team to the Energizer bunny—it just keeps going and going and going. Saturday, the team handily defeated Reavis High School in two games (25-13, 25-13) to claim its second IHSA regional title in two years. "Taking it one game at a time has helped us to keep winning, because there's no way that you can win the game you're playing if all you're thinking about is what's next," said junior libero Megan Miller. LT leaders included junior Laura Williams, with seven kills, four aces; senior Jocelyn Birks, with seven kills; junior Alexis Viliunas, with four kills, two aces, 14 assists; and senior Kelsey Keeve, with six kills. Although the scoreline showed otherwise, Reavis put up a …

Lions improve to 9-1 with playoff win,
to face Sandburg at home next Friday.
Coming off a monumental 31-13 defeat of West Suburban Silver Conference powerhouse Glenbard West High School, the Lyons Township High School football team dismantled Chicago Vocational Career Academy 58-0 in the opening round of the IHSA playoffs. The Lions--whose last home game ended in a resounding 54-7 victory over Leyden High School—upped the high scoring ante Friday night, blasting Vocational for 51 first half points in a game that was decided within the first six minutes. "Any win you can get in the playoffs is sweet," head coach Kurt Weinberg. "We had it going early on, and we kept it going." Senior quarterback Brian Kelley believes the team's recent success stems from good coaching. "We feel like we prepare very well for every game…
