With New Business Plan, La Grange Park Looks to Revitalize Commerce

The Village has approved a detailed schematic for bettering its relationship with its businesses, attracting new ones and improving business prospects overall.

A commercial revitalization plan passed by the La Grange Park Board of Trustees in January promises that the Village will begin taking a number of steps to make La Grange Park more commerce-friendly and to better serve the Village’s approximately 100 businesses.  The plan includes a list of nearly 40 action-items for the Village to take—some already completed, others extremely long-term—and levels them based on immediacy in an “implementation matrix.” Items on the list range from the simple (hold more ribbon-cuttings and send press releases, attend Village meetings and industry events, better use e-briefs and the Rose Clippings newsletter to promote businesses) to the complex and far-off (develop a marketing campaign for Village businesses…

Park Junior High Art Gallery Featured on WTTW's 'Chicago Tonight'

The recently renovated and highly unique Nettie J. McKinnon gallery is called "a treasure of American fine art" in the five-minute segment.

The program “Chicago Tonight” on PBS channel WTTW has produced and aired a five-minute segment on the recently renovated Nettie J. McKinnon art gallery at Park Junior High School in La Grange Park, calling it “A Treasure of American Fine Art.”  The segment (which can be watched in full here) tells the story of how former area principal McKinnon began collecting art during the Great Depression in what eventually expanded into a full gallery with some notable artists and rare treasures.  As related in the piece, the gallery includes work by famous artists like John Henry Twachtman and John Singer Sargent. Every piece in the gallery is worth over $10,000, the segment said (the gallery is well-secured), with ones of less cost spilling into the…

My daughter (who's a Junior @ LT this year.) was a docent for the Nettie J. McKinnon Gallery when she attended Park Junior High. She studied and learned about each piece of art work in the gallery and then was able to take guests on tours through the gallery. Guests who toured the gallery included students from district 102 as well as people from all over the area who had an interest in art. This…   more ›

La Grange Park Potters Sculpt Against Hunger

The upcoming Empty Bowls event put on by the pottery studio raised $6,400 for local food pantries in 2012.

Volunteers at Village Potters in La Grange Park spent eight hours on Saturday sculpting and throwing as part of the Empty Bowls project to raise money and awareness for local hunger-relief organizations, The Doings La Grange reports. According to the paper, after a second bowl-a-thon session on March 10, pottery will be sold at the main annual Empty Bowls event on May 9, which raised $6,400 for area food pantries in 2012. More information is available at the Village Potters website, according to which, “the basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls... In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls …

Biggest Snow of the Year on the Way for La Grange/Western Springs?

Considering we haven't had much snow at all, any amount could seem "big."

UPDATED Wednesday, 3:15 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in Cook Count from 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday. Snow is expected to develop Thursday evening and continue into Friday, the NWS said Wednesday afternoon. The snow may mix with light freezing drizzle or rain Friday morning, making for slick travel. Storm total snowfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with ice accumulation of less than one-tenth of an inch. ORIGINAL STORY: The Chicago area could see its "biggest snow of the year" Thursday into Friday morning, according to Accuweather.com. So far, we've received little more than a dusting, so is the "biggest snow of the year" going to be something on which we can sled? The storm has the…

Gas Prices Continue to Rise; La Grange/Western Springs Prices Well Above National Average

CNN Money reported Monday the average price for a gallon of gasoline in America is $3.73. Gas prices are 26 to 66 cents higher in the La Grange/Western Springs area.

Most motorists have noticed the price of gasoline has risen dramatically over the past month. CNN Money reported Monday that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in America has increased more than 13 percent over the past 32 days, to $3.73. As of Tuesday morning, gas prices in the La Grange/Western Springs area ranged from $3.99 at the SuperSonic in Countryside at La Grange Road and 53rd Street, to $4.39 at Mobil in Western Springs at 5500 Wolf Road and 55th Street, according to GasBuddy.com. CNN Money is crediting the price increase to a combination of factors, including rising crude oil prices, production cuts and refinery closings.  The Chicago Tribune reported last week a number of refinery issues in the area have …

Find a Pet-Sitter Around La Grange/Western Springs

A request for a local pet-sitter turned into one of the most popular posts on the La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch Facebook pages.

We at La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch were rather taken by surprise when our Facebook call-out for at-home pet-sitters in the area got a bucketload of responses. All we were looking for was a sitter for Emily Logue, whose beagle really doesn't care for kennels, but we got so many responses that it made sense to compile them into an article! If you're heading out of town and need someone to look after your pooch, kitty or other furry/feathered/fishy/other friend, try any of the following: Did we miss yours, or your favorites? What Failing La Grange/Western Springs Bridges Would Obama's Program Target?

In his 2013 State of the Union Address Tuesday, President Barack Obama proposed a "Fix it First" plan that may affect the Lyons Township area. Find out what local bridges are obsolete and which are failing.

President Barack Obama proposed Tuesday night what he called a "Fix It First" program to address the nation's crumbling infrastructure—like roads and bridges—in an effort to improve citizens' quality of life and bring jobs to the United States. "I propose a 'Fix-It-First' program to put people to work as soon as possible on our most urgent repairs, like the nearly 70,000 structurally deficient bridges across the country," he said during the State of the Union Address. "And to make sure taxpayers don’t shoulder the whole burden, I’m also proposing a Partnership to Rebuild America that attracts private capital to upgrade what our businesses need most—modern ports to move goods; modern pipelines to withstand a storm; modern schools worthy of …

Darren, What is the definition of these terms? Why is the Ogden bridge over 294 "functionally obselete"? It safely carries all those cars over 294 safely every day, has no potholes, never has a backup...perhaps because it's not a toll bridge? (that last part is a joke). Really, why? Also, if a bridge is "structurally deficient", why is it even open for business? This smells like a lawsuit waiting…   more ›

Western Springs Mom Brings Peer Tutoring Business to LT Area

Aristotle Peers pairs local students with academically-qualified high-school- and college-aged tutors; the business is now open in Western Springs, La Grange and the area.

A peer tutoring company founded by a high-school junior in 2004 has now arrived in the Lyons Township area via a Western Springs mom and is already finding success pairing students and tutors. Western Springs mom-of-three Hilary Remijas launched the west-suburban Chicago branch of the company Aristotle Peers in November and, despite the winter-break lull, is already matching nearly a dozen tutors with nearly dozen clients. “I’m thrilled to offer this to this community, because I just feel like it’s a great thing for everybody involved,” Remijas said. “To be able to see the kids who have gone through the school system then help their younger peers—I think that’s a great thing for everybody.” Founded as Peer2Peer Tutors (name change courtesy…
