Another Windy Snowstorm Set to Hit on Tuesday Night

Winds of 30 miles per hour and snowfall of up to six inches are expected as another winter weather pattern blows through the Midwest this week.

Another winter storm is brewing, running a diagonal path from north Texas to Michigan, and guess what: La Grange and Western Springs are in the way! The blizzard is forecast to lose a bit of steam by the time it reaches us (Kansas City might get a foot and a half!), so don't go crazy or anything, but it's looking like we'll definitely get a few more inches, followed by occasional flurries for a couple more days. And it'll even stick around: as we move into March, there are few signs of a super-early thaw with most highs still below freezing. Here's your weather: Monday: Partly sunny during the day, mostly cloudy at night. High 30s during the day, low 30s at night. Tuesday: Cloudy and extremely windy with a 90 percent chance of snow and …

Weather Watch

Rain, Light Snow and Oscillating Temperatures Ahead

A warm and wet Monday, a cool Tuesday, and then some weather all over the place (freezing drizzle!) for the rest of the week.

It's lukewarm and wet! No, it's cold and sunny! No, it's raining... and now the rain is freezing! It's actually all over the place this week as a February tumult swamps the La Grange and Western Springs area. Here's your weather: Monday: Cloudy, rainy and windy during the day, cloudy and windy with wintry rain/snow at night. Mid 40s during the day, high 10s at night. Tuesday: Cloudy and windy with scattered flurries during the day, partly cloudy and blustery at night. Low 20s during the day, high 0s at night. Wednesday: Sunny during the day, partly cloudy at night. Mid 20s during the day, low 20s at night. Thursday: Mostly cloudy and windy during the day, cloudy and windy with freezing drizzle at night. High 20s during the day, mid 20s at …

Breezy Monday then Semi-Mild Week Ahead

There's a chance of some snow by the very end of the week, but the melt comes first.

Allegedly, those little wisps of snow that we got on Friday night was actually part of the same Nemo that pounded New England into submission this weekend. Tough news for local fans of snow sports: it was no more than wisps, couple inches at best, and that still looks like all anyone is likely to get this winter. The clock is ticking down for Chicago to get creamed by any real snowstorm, and it may just run out. By midweek this week, even the little piles of white you might still be able to see on Monday should be  Monday: Very windy with a 30 percent chance of snow showers during the day, windy and mostly cloudy at night. Mid 30s during the day, mid 20s at night. Tuesday: Partly sunny during the day, partly clear at night. Mid 30s during …

Weather Watch

Light Snow, Then Temperatures Above Freezing Ahead

Temperatures level out a bit this week after last week's wild rise and fall, edging above freezing by the weekend.

After last week's wacky extremes, plunging from 65 degrees to 0 in about the same time it takes to chill a drink (hyperbole), the weather should level out a bit this next week in the area. The big blizzard is still holding off, and may never happen for the second year in a row, but if you're reading this on Monday morning, you should see a bit of white outside, and that should continue through the day. Until warmer temperatures at the end of the week rub it out, anyway.  Here's your weather: Monday: Cloudy with a light falling snow during the day, mostly cloudy at night. Mid 20s during the day, high 0s at night. Tuesday: Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow flurries during the day, mostly cloudy at night. Low 30s during the day, high …

Weather Watch

60-Degree Tuesday, Then 0-Degree Thursday Night

Crazy week of weather ahead! Be on ice watch as a warm rain should fall early on, followed by a ridiculously huge temperature drop.

Weather just doesn't make sense anymore. What machinations of the gods could possibly explain how temperatures this week are forecasted to drop 60 degrees in less than 48 hours? Whatever the reason, it can only mean one thing when a load of rain is followed by a snap freeze: ice, and lots of it. Better drive really, really carefully in the latter half of this week... Here's your weather: Monday: Cloudy with a 40 percent chance of rain during the day, cloudy with a 70 percent chance of rain at night. Mid 40s during the day, high 40s at night. Tuesday: Cloudy and windy with an 80 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms during the day and into the night. Low 60s during the day, mid 30s at night. Wednesday: Cloudy and very windy with a 30 …

Freezing Cold Temperatures All Next Week, Windy Monday

Finally! The warm spell has finally broken and real freezing temperatures have arrived. If you've been waiting for skating weather, it's on its way!

Baby, it's cold outside, and it's about time too! Look, we like warm weather and not having to shovel snow as much as anyone, but having a second super-mild winter in a row has just been feeling kind of wrong! We could handle one enormous blizzard, just one, and while it doesn't look like that's coming this week, at least the temperatures for it are forecast, and we might get some snow showers midweek, too. Here's your weather: Monday: Partly cloudy and blustery during the day, partly cloudy and very cold at night. Low 10s during the day, low 0s at night. Tuesday: Mostly sunny during the day, mostly cloudy at night. Low 10s during the day, high 0s at night. Wednesday: Mostly cloudy during the day, mostly cloudy with a chance of flurries at…

No, Darren, we do NOT want a super blizzard. A nice 3" storm in February and then gentle rains in March and April to replenish the groundwater.   more ›

Weather Watch

Sunny Week, No Snow, Highs in the 30s

Our fairly pedestrian winter continues with no particular threat to your commute or need to fire up the snowblower.

So I'm wondering: How are people feeling about not having snow so far for the second straight winter? Personally, I'm OK with it. I like snow for sledding and downhill skiing, but here in the Midwest, God's ironing board, there aren't a lot of options for that, which means the white stuff is mostly a hassle. Of course, if you're 10 and desperately want to build a snowman or chuck snowballs at your friends, you might disagree. But with clear skies this week, you're out of luck. Again. Sorry. Here's your weather: Monday: Sunny during the day, clear at night. Mid 20s during the day, mid 10s at night. Tuesday: Sunny during the day, clear at night. Low 30s during the day, low 20s at night. Wednesday: Partly cloudy and windy during the day, …

50-Degree Temperatures Forecasted by Friday?!

This week ahead is predicted to be bizarrely warm for the middle of January.

Here at Patch WeatherWatch, we are finding it increasingly difficult to come up with unique ways to say "it's going to be surprisingy warm this week." Seems like we've been doing it for the past three months, if not longer (we still remember high-50s days back in February 2012.) But this one has us completely by surprise. If you believe the forecasts, the mercury will rise a whopping 20 degrees above freezing by Friday, into the low 50s. It's not quite the 61 degrees recorded on Jan. 11, 1880, but it's yet one more day over the past fifteen months that has not been as cold as we'd expect. Here's your weather: Monday: Sunny and breezy during the day, partly cloudy at night. High 30s during the day, high 20s at night. Tuesday: Mostly sunny …

Snow on Christmas Day? It's Possible!

There's a good chance of at least seeing some flurries on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.

So despite making travel a miniature disaster for some at end of last week, the "thundersnow," while at least ending that goofy streak of snow-free days, didn't really turn out to be much. However, there might be a bit more of the white stuff on the way to provide Western Springs and La Grange with a white Christmas after all. Here's your weather: Monday: Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of wintry mix during the day, cloudy at night. Mid 30s during the day, mid 20s at night. Tuesday: Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of snow showers during the day, cloudy with a slight chance of snow at night. Mid 30s during the day, high 20s at night. Wednesday: Cloudy and windy with a 50 percent chance of snow during the day, cloudy with a slight chance …

Thundersnow, Gale-Force Winds Predicted for La Grange, Western Springs Area

Thundersnow means higher snow accumulations when the storm hits our area; winds are expected to be up to 30-40 miles per hour, gusting as high as 55, by Thursday night.

Those of us following the weather predicting our first significant snowfall on Thursday knew the area would first be hit with rain. In fact, the National Weather Service forecast mentions rain first for the La Grange area. "Rain (is) likely, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after midnight," the forecast states. Locally, the NWS is based in Romeoville. A second forecast, from the Northern Illinois Storm Chaser Forecasting Facebook page predicts thundersnow. "Intense thundersnow will boost rates and totals over the area," the status states. "Chicago metro could get 3 inches south to 6 north all being blown around by 60 mph winds." The page says the event will be short in duration. By Thursday, the NWS forecast includes occassional rain …

Bigger problem is what happens to what does come down when the temperature rapidly drops into the teens Thursday night. I'd rather have 6" of snow than 1/2" of ice on everything. Plus, if this thing shifts its track 100 miles south we'll get what is predicted for Wisconsin...a blizzard. Sometimes the media hysteria is warranted.   more ›
