LT Students Dance too Dirty, Dad Says

The bumping and grinding at Lyons Township functions such as Homecoming is appalling, a parent told the District 204 board at Monday's meeting.

Everyone’s cutting a little too loose at Lyons Township High School, one father said Monday at the District 204 School Board meeting. Ken Mulcrone implored the district to keep a tighter watch on the moves students pull on the dance floor after what he witnessed when he and his wife chaperoned last fall’s Homecoming Dance. “My wife and I went into the gymnasium and our jaws dropped to the floor because of a dance called the grind,” he said. Though Mulcrone did not go into detail, grinding is typically known as a dance where people rub up against each other suggestively. “You just wouldn’t want to have a daughter in that situation,” he said. “It’s not right, it’s not fair, and it’s appalling.” Mulcrone has one son who is a senior at LT and …

Lyons Township HS Boys' Gymnastics Places Fifth at State

The team also had several athletes place in individual events.

  The Lyons Township High School boys’ gymnastics team placed fifth at the Illinios High School Association state meet this weekend. LT Transition Program Expanding Garden; Local Businesses on Board

Students in Lyons Township's transition program have been growing and selling their own vegetables for a couple of years, but an expanded garden will increase the opportunities to learn and grow.

Lyons Township recently broke ground on a new garden that students in the high school's transition program will use to learn about gardening and business, and local restaurants and residents will get to consume the product.  The transition program, which helps 18- to 22-year-old students move from high school to adult life, teaches them about cooking, cleaning, business skills and lots more. And with an expanded garden, the students will get to focus on some of the vital tenets of the program: community participation and business skills.  Students have been gardening for a couple of years, but this new setup will allow them to grow a greater variety of fruits and vegetables and do so in a more accessible and interactive area. Newsweek Names Lyons Township as #1312 High School in USA

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Lyons Township's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. Joe: This is what was told to us by the faculty and guidance counselors. It certainly seemed plausible then when we had intellectually competitive events with other schools and the only high school that consistently bested us was New Trier. Support the female student athletes from Lyons Township High School at the 4th annual Pink Out games on May 4.

Lyons Township High School will its fourth annual "Pink Out" to celebrate the achievements of female student athletes at LTHS and illustrate the charitable efforts of the student body. This year's events include: Friday, May 3: Fourth annual Little Lions Pink Out Clinic conducted by the girls soccer program. La Grange Teens Sell Shoelaces to Benefit Boston Marathon Victims

"I just hope that the people in Boston know the whole running community cares about them," Lyons Township senior Alexus Serrano said.

Hannah Bartman and Alexus Serrano, like most of us, were devastated last week when they heard about the Boston Marathon bombings. As runners, the two La Grange teens took the bombings personally—and they knew immediately they wanted to help. What better way, they thought, than by selling shoelaces to benefit the Red Cross and the Boston Athletic Association (BAA). “The shoelaces are something symbolic of the sport and all the marathon represents,” Bartman said in an email from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is a freshman. “And whenever you lace up your running/athletic shoes with the ‘Pray for Boston’ shoelaces, you are doing so in memory and honor of those who no longer can run.” Both Bartman and Serrano ran …
