Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors nearly reaches the finals of the Class 4A Three-Point Showdown while the LT boys gymnastics team begins its season and the indoor track teams post strong times at the Mustang Relays.
Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors had a strong showing at the Class 4A girls basketball Country Financial Three-Point Showdown preliminaries March 1 at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal. It nearly was even more successful. Connors made 9 of 15 attempts to tie for 10th place among the 32 entries that had qualified with top-four finishes in four previous rounds prior to regional and sectional games. Four players advanced to the championship round March 2. If Connors had made 10, she would have been in a three-player shootout with six other players for the final advancing qualifying spot. “Nine of out 15 shots made is phenomenal—that’s more than 50 percent. And she knows how tough it was to advance to the next round,” LT…

The Lyons Township girls basketball team was defeated by Proviso West in the Class 4A Proviso West Regional semifinals to the Lions' season at 16-11, their first winning season since their last regional championship in 2005.
The Lyons Township girls basketball team enjoyed a great reversal of fortune this season. Starting senior tri-captains Colleen Connors, Maggie Orlowski and Clare Polega were a big reason why. On Wednesday, the Lions nearly had one last comeback in them, but their season ended with a 54-37 loss to Proviso West in the Class 4A Proviso West Regional semifinals in Hillside. LT (16-11), the No. 9 seed in the LT Sectional, trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter but closed to 30-27 midway through the third quarter. No. 7-seed Proviso West (22-10) ended the quarter leading 37-29 and opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to pull away. Last year, in Katie Meyers' first season as the LT head coach, the Lions' record was 9-17. “We …

The Lions lost the teams’ first meeting 54-47 Nov. 29 in Hillside before winning the second 57-48 Jan. 21 in front of a Pack the Place crowd in La Grange. “We’re hoping to upset Proviso West. The Lyons Township girls basketball team lost its Silver finale at York to finish third in the final standings while the boys basketball team almost overcame early deficits but lost to York and Hinsdale South.
The progress of the Lyons Township girls basketball team this season resulted in a disappointing feeling Friday at York. The Lions’ last chance to contend for the West Suburban Conference Silver Division came to an end as they lost to the Dukes 47-32 in Elmhurst in the league finale. LT’s Maggie Orlowski had 11 points, including a three-pointer. The Lions (16-8, 7-5 in Silver) finish third in the final Silver standings, two games behind co-champs York (15-11, 9-3) and Proviso West (19-10, 9-3). Even if the Lions won Friday, Proviso West was earning at least a share of the crown at the same time by beating Downers Grove North 51-27. “(Those losses) hurt our chances a lot in coming out with a conference title, but we didn’t even come into …

Gymnast Kelsy Kurfirst won all-around and three events at the Silver Meet and the wrestling and swimming and diving teams prepare for postseason.
Lyons Township freshman Kelsy Kurfirst had quite an impressive first West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet Saturday, winning the all-around and three events. Seniors Ali Stuck and Kalen Iffert also enjoyed firsts—their first all-conference varsity medals with top-five finishes. The Lions scored a season-high 142.975 points at Downers Grove North to finish second and second in the overall standings to Glenbard West’s 144.85. The Hilltoppers went undefeated in duals and the Silver Meet for the first time in program history to capture just their third overall title ever. Glenbard West won the Silver Meet for the first time last year but finished second overall to Hinsdale Central. LT beat its 142.325 from Jan. 14 even with three …

In front of a Pack the Place home crowd, the Lyons Township girls basketball team defeated Silver leader Proviso West and the LT boys basketball team topped the Panthers for their sixth straight victory.
Lyons Township point guard Victoria Swift hasn’t just earned the confidence of coach Katie Meyers to start on the varsity girls basketball team as a freshman. Meyers wants Swift to take advantage of her three-point opportunities. “I don’t give many players green lights to shoot when they have an open look and I’m telling her she can shoot when she has an open look,” Meyers said. “Even when she’s sub-30 percent, I will be OK with it because I know she has such talent for shooting beyond the arc.” In Saturday’s Pack the Place home game, Swift played and shot with that confidence. It contributed to the Lions’ biggest victory so far this season, 57-48 over West Suburban Conference Silver Division frontrunner Proviso West in La Grange. Swift, …

The Lyons Township girls basketball team defeated York 46-44 while the boys basketball team earned a huge home victory over Oak Park-River Forest; plus swimming, bowling, gymnastics and wrestling updates.
Lyons Township girls basketball player Ashanti Davis hadn’t scored since the first half of Tuesday’s game against York. With the outcome on the line, Davis didn’t hestitate wanting the ball. Davis took the pass from Kayla Morrissey at the top of the key, drove the lane and scored with nine seconds left to lift the Lions to an emotional and important 46-44 West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory in La Grange. Now LT (12-6, 5-3 in Silver) is still in the conference race with its next game against first-place Proviso West (14-7, 6-1) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in La Grange as part of LT’s Pack the Place lineup. “Ashanti’s great in the open court, but what was great about that shot was Ashanti finished in the half-court set,” LT coach …

The Lyons Township boys basketball team certainly didn’t look like a lineup that had won just one game prior to the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York. On Friday, the unseeded Lions claimed seventh place in the 16-team field with their second tourney victory, 70-61 over seventh-seeded Maine South. With an outstanding shooting display, LT (3-9) opened action by upsetting fourth-seeded Waubonsie Valley 80-71 Dec. 27 and nearly pulled off another upset in the quarterfinals but was edged by fifth-seed Naperville North 59-56 Dec. 28. The Lions then lost to unseeded St. Francis 72-57 Dec. 29. Waubonsie Valley (9-4) went on to win the consolation bracket, Naperville North (8-4) finished fourth and St. Francis (8-3) was sixth. LT resumes action …
