LT's Viliunas named Illinois Gatorade Player of Year

Lyons Township senior and Western Springs resident Alexis Viliunas has been named the Gatorade Illinois Volleyball Player of the Year, the first LT player to receive the honor.

Lyons Township senior volleyball player Alexis Viliunas knew something was up Wednesday. As she sat in teacher Kristine Blachinski’s calculus class, Viliunas caught a glimpse of LT girls volleyball coach Joann Pyritz outside the room. “When I saw her I was like, ‘This is weird.’ The (north campus) buildings are separate, and she usually isn’t in our building,” Viliunas said. Moments later, Pyritz was standing at the class podium to read an announcement – Viliunas had just been named the 2011-12 Gatorade Illinois Volleyball Player of the Year. Viliunas, a 6-foot-1 setter/hitter, is the first LT volleyball player to receive the honor. She is among 50 nominees for the National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced later this …

The Lyons Township girls volleyball team will play Marist at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hinsdale South Super-Sectional with a downstate berth on the line after beating Whitney Young in three sets Thursday to capture the Class 4A Whitney Young Sectional.

Senior four-year varsity players Laura Williams, Alexis Viliunas and Megan Miller looked like veteran leaders for the Lyons Township girls volleyball team Thursday. So did Toni Saracco and Hannah Juley. And they’re freshmen. LT (30-8) goes for its third straight downstate trip against Marist (33-6) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hinsdale South Super-Sectional. LT Sports Roundup: Football Stuns With 21-Point Fourth Quarter, Volleyball Captures Ninth Straight Regional

While Lyons Township football pulled out an astonishing playoff upset win over Bartlett, the volleyball team, the No. 1 seed in the Whitney Young Sectional, advanced to the sectional semifinals.

Lyons Township's football season was looking dead and buried—down 35-10 midway through the second quarter of their elimination playoff game against Bartlett High, and still trailing 42-24 at the beginning of the fourth. But the tenacious Lions (6-4) fought back, first wtih a 7-yard run by senior Jaime Jones, then a Zachary Mahoney 14-yard pass to senior Evan Booth. They wrapped up their incredible comeback as jack-of-all-trades Matthew Harris first blocked a punt, then took a direct snap 18 yards in to give the Lions an improbable 45-42 lead. Bartlett's Ian Dobek has a chance to tie it with a 33-yard field goal at 0:10 left, but the kick sailed wide left, setting off a frenzied Lions celebration. Harris was the game's undisputed star, …

Morton answered with an even more stunning one, scoring with just 2:18 left in regulation to force overtime.  The perennial soccer powers once again brought out the best in each other before Morton prevailed 4-3 on Jesus Morales’ penalty kick with just six seconds left in the second of four 10-minute, sudden-death overtimes. The kick was awarded after LT senior standout center midfielder Elliot Borge had to make an intentional handball save to prevent a winning shot by Luis Jose Alvarado off a strong sidelines throw-in. LT (14-5-3), the …
