Halligan Gets 45 Years for 2003 Murder

Sherry Halligan, formerly of La Grange, was sentenced Tuesday after she was convicted in February in the stabbing death of Dennis Campbell.

A judge sentenced Sherry Halligan, formerly of La Grange, to 45 years in prison Tuesday after she was convicted in February of a 2003 murder, the Doings reported. Halligan, 54, spent seven years evading law enforcement after initially turning herself into police for the stabbing death of Dennis Campbell, also of La Grange. She declined to speak at her sentencing hearing, as did Campbell’s family, who had prosecutors present statements on their behalf. “Justice is never going to be served as long as my uncle is dead and she’s walking on earth,” Liz Ford, Campbell’s niece, told the Doings in February. “There wasn’t a better man on earth. I miss him every day.” Read the whole story on the Doings website. Earlier:

Court Supervision: Not The Pedro Hernandez You Were Looking For

A New Lenox man spoke of his "horrific" ordeal in the county jail after he was arrested for a murder someone else was wanted for.

We started the week off by talking with the New Lenox man jailed for two weeks for a murder allegedly committed by someone else with the same name. Pedro Hernandez, 67, said his time in the Will County jail was "horrific," and that he's looking for a lawyer to talk to about filing a lawsuit. But Hernandez's ordeal was just one of the things going on last week. There was also: Check out all these stories and more on our Facebook page.

Convicted La Grange Killer's Sentencing Rescheduled

Motions for both an appeal and a new trial have been filed on behalf of Shelly Halligan, who was convicted of first-degree murder earlier in February.

The sentencing for 54-year-old Sherry Halligan, the former La Grange woman convicted of first-degree murder in the 2003 shooting death of Dennis Campbell in the Village, has been delayed due to requests from two attorneys representing her, The Doings La Grange reports. According to the paper, an attorney from Halligan's original defense has filed for a new trial, while a new attorney has filed for an appeal, both asking to review transcripts of her trial in January and February; the sentencing has been rescheduled for April 16. Halligan initially confessed to the shooting before disappearing in April 2004. She was recaptured in 2010 and convicted on Feb. 1, nearly a decade to the day after the original shooting. Accused O'Laughlin Killer Returns to Court as Own Lawyer

One hearing after his pro se motion was granted, John L. Wilson received 2,600 pages of discovery documents Wednesday. His request to have his hands freed from cuffs during future proceedings will be considered in March.

The man charged with the 2011 murder of 14-year-old Lyons Township student Kelli O’Laughlin was back in court Wednesday morning, and during the first hearing since a granted pro se motion allowed John L. Wilson to represent himself, signed for thousands of pages worth of documents a defendant's lawyer would typically hold. Wilson, dressed in a yellow and green jumpsuit and surrounded by several armed guards, signed with cuffed hands four receipts acknowledging the state's turnover of about 2,600 pages of discovery documents to the defendant. The pages will be transported by law enforcement officers to the Pontiac, IL, prison housing Wilson. Wilson asked presiding judge John Hynes if the documents could be mailed to him personally in the …

Court Supervision: Groundhog Day

We could swear we've seen some of these people around here before.

So it's Groundhog Day. This whole week felt like Groundhog Day. Day after day we seemed to be seeing the same people over and over. Maybe our minds were playing tricks on us. Or maybe not. Just look, on Friday we had one of the lawyers representing Drew Peterson in court trying to get former Peterson lawyer Joel Brodsky to give up his financial records. Peterson and Brodsky have been haunting the courthouse for years now. Peterson has been found guilty of murder, and Brodsky no longer represents the convicted wife-killer, but it doesn't look like they've really gone away. And Margarita Hernandez, who faces charges she set up a sex date with a teenage boy, was in court not once, but twice last week. The first time, her trial was scheduled …

Halligan Found Guilty in 2003 La Grange Murder

After seven years evading justice, the former La Grange woman was convicted of first-degree murder in Bridgeview court on Friday.

Sherry Halligan, the 54-year-old former La Grange woman who spent seven years as a fugitive from the law, has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting of her boyfriend, Dennis Campbell, in a southern La Grange home in 2003. According to the Chicago Tribune, Halligan showed no reaction to the verdict, while Campbell’s family hugged. The family told The Doings La Grange that while the outcome was what they had wanted, it would never be enough. “Justice is never going to be served as long as my uncle is dead and she’s walking on earth,” Liz Ford, Campbell’s niece, told the paper. “There wasn’t a better man on earth. I miss him every day.” After the shooting on Jan. 30, 2003, Halligan turned herself in to police, confessed to …

Accused O’Laughlin Killer Will Represent Self in Court

John L. Wilson, who is charged with the 2011 child murder in Indian Head Park, has been granted a motion of pro se with only stand-by counsel.

The man accused in the October 2011 murder of 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin in her Indian Head Park home has been granted the right to serve as his own lawyer as the case proceeds toward a likely trial. John L. Wilson was granted a pro se motion on Dec. 19 by presiding judge John Hynes. A public defender has been appointed as stand-by counsel. Defendants have the right to represent themselves even against their own self-interest, said Pat Reardon, first assistant public defender for Cook County, and no one can stop them from exercising that right. But lawyers tend to think it’s a bad call. “Frankly, from the view of the public defender, it’s a nightmare,” Reardon said. “There’s an old saying that a person who has himself for a lawyer has a …

Former Village Employee Runs Over Wife, Stomps Her Face: Cops

A Crest Hill man who used to work for La Grange Public Works was charged with murder after he stomped in the face of the wife he just ran over in front of paramedics, police said.

After running over his wife in their Crest Hill garage, a man called 911 for help with the "accident," then paramedics arrived just in time to see him stomping in the dying woman's face, police and prosecutors said. The man, Jerry Nichols, 62, appeared in bond court before Will County Judge Roger Rickmon Monday afternoon. Nichols faces two counts of first degree murder. Prosecutors dropped charges of domestic battery and reckless homicide. Nichols' wife, Diane Nichols, 55, was taken from their 16040 Arborvitae Circle home to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where she was pronounced dead. Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said detectives have yet to establish a motive for the alleged Saturday morning attack. Both …
