Nazareth Academy's female students celebrated Women's History Month on Friday by going without make-up to prove that they're 'More than a Pretty Face.'
Although many women feel tremendous pressure to conform to a standard of beauty, the young ladies at Nazareth Academy took a step Friday to prove that it's what's inside that really counts. Dozens of students, teachers and staff participated in "Make-Up Free Friday," the culmination of a Women's History Month celebration around the theme "More than a Pretty Face." The goal was to emphasize that society should appreciate women for their whole character, not just their looks, said Nazareth Principal Deborah Tracy in a statement. "This, as we know, is especially difficult when we are a part of a culture that places so much emphasis on outer beauty and unfortunately, our young women can still get caught up in all of the pressure this …

About 50 guests, plus their student escorts, danced, played games, and cheered their new king and queen Saturday at Nazareth Academy.
Rosemary Caragher knew Nazareth Academywas on to something special last year when it decided to host a prom for teens with disabilities. But she said she had no idea just how extraordinary it would be. “It was the most magical night that ever could have happened,” said Caragher, the campus minister. “It was beyond my expectations.” The school recaptured that magic Saturday when it held its second annual Prom Night for Teens with Disabilities, hosted by Friends in Service and Partnership and Nazareth Student Council. The prom, in its second year, gives teens with special needs throughout the area a night to call their own.
Rosemary Caragher knew Nazareth Academy was on to something special last year when it decided to host a prom for teens with disabilities. But she said she had no idea just how extraordinary it would be. “It was the most magical night that ever could have happened,” said Caragher, the campus minister. “It was beyond my expectations.” The school hopes to recapture that magic Saturday when it hosts its second annual Prom Night for Teens with Disabilities, hosted by Friends in Service and Partnership and Nazareth Student Council. Nazareth will roll out the green carpet—in honor of St. Patrick’s Day—for about 50 guests, up by 10 from last year. Teens from throughout the community are invited, and while they’re welcome to bring a date, it’s not …

Junior Allison Kurek, of Chicago, is the starting goalie for the Roadrunners hockey team, continuing a legacy started by her older brother at Naz.
Nazareth Academy junior Allison Kurek has become the starting goalie for the Roadrunners' boys hockey team, a spot held by her brother Bronson a few years ago, The Doings La Grange reports. According the the paper, Kurek, also an all-Illinois lacrosse midfielder, played junior-varsity as a freshman and some varsity as a senior before landing the starting role this year, where she has racked up an 81 percent save percentage, including 42 in one game. “The boys kind of scratched their heads about having a girl on the team, but after a while Allison fits right in,” Naz coach Derek Gordon told the paper. “Allison is a very special athlete... It says a lot about her character that she comes out and competes in a couple activities every day. She…

The play, written, produced and set in the Chicago area, tackles issues of race and class head-on and aims for a complex, interactive experience for audience members.
Ever wanted to pass judgment upon the characters in a play? Perhaps particularly if the play takes on hair-trigger issues of race, religion and class and challenges you to examine your own views and assumptions? You’ll have a chance at Defamation, a unique theatre experience playing this Friday, Oct. 5, at Nazareth Academy. Written by Evanston playwright Todd Logan, author of many Chicago-performed theatre pieces, the show is touring throughout the Windy City suburbs this year and stops for a one-night performance in La Grange Park this week. The “courtroom drama” is about a Winnetka Jewish real-estate developer who accuses an African-American South Side business woman of stealing a watch; the businesswoman brings a civil defamation suit …

I'm sorry you feel that way. Nazareth Academy called the whole campaign "More than a Pretty Face." The point of Make-Up Free Friday was for the girls to focus on the other qualities that make them beautiful, aside from their looks (and I agree, they are adorable without make-up!). That's what the headline is supposed to convey.   more ›
