P.E. Power: The Appeal of In-School Sporting

Phys-ed was once a dreaded bore and an easy punchline. These days, it's something departing seniors may well miss.

Physical Education has long been touted as the "blow-off" class of middle and secondary education, and there is no denying that. Movies such as the classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" perfectly illustrate the so called "traditional gym class," with a boring, senile old teacher demanding that his half-conscious pupils tediously jog around a track for 45 minutes. If physical education was like that, I can promise you, this column would be one of ruthless critique, not praise. Interestingly enough, physical education at both McClure Junior High and Lyons Township High School, for example, is not only beneficial to health awareness, but often times can be extremely enjoyable.
