Western Springs police reports, April 8-14.
Sunday, April 14 Approximately $500, credit cards and a leather purse were stolen out of a locked car after someone smashed the driver’s side window, Western Springs police said. The theft happened between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the lower level parking lot of Spring Rock Park. Friday, April 12 Conrad Rutkowski, 30, of the 0-100 block of North Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights, was arrested and charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license, police said. Police pulled Rutkowski over for speeding at about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Interstate 294. A record check showed his license had been suspended, police said. LA GRANGE A dog inside a van broke through the windshield with its head while barking at passers by in the 100 block of West Harris, police said. The dog did not appear to be injured, police said. Shattered glass covered the ground outside the van. Its owner said it had never done anything like this before. OAK PARK Someone wrote derogatory words in white paint on a Volvo in the 100 block of Forest and a bronze statue of Frank Lloyd Wright and rock in Austin Gardens. OAK PARK A 31-year-old woman was attacked while walking her dog at 12:42 p.m. March 27 in the 300 block of N. Austin. Police said a man approached her yelling, "Get that dog," then kicked the dog. The offender then punched the woman in the face and fled westbound. He's described as 45 years old, 5-foot-8 with a medium build and black hair, and he was wearing a purple coat with whie sleeves and khaki pants. FOREST PARK Police were called to the 7200 block of Franklin at 1:37 p.m. March 27 to check on a man yelling "I love Mary!" in the middle of the street. Gerard N. Thursday, March 28 Brynn E. Bixby, 26, was cited around 5:20 p.m. near the intersection of Ogden and Johnson avenues, Western Springs police said. While traveling westbound on Ogden, Bixby struck a car that was stopped in traffic, police said. She was charged with driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Monday, March 25 David N. Kokaska, 53, of the 5200 block of Lawn Avenue in Western Springs, was cited around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of 51st Street and Lawn Avenue, police said. Kokaska collided with a car going through the intersection because he said he didn’t realize the other driver didn’t have a stop sign, police said. He was ticketed for disobeying a stop sign.

OAK PARK A 16-year-old juvenile was charged with aggravated battery after an incident at the alternative school in the 6500 block of W. North Avenue. Police said the juvenile became unruly and then bit one staff member on the thigh and scratched two other staffers who tried to restrain him. He was taken to a juvenile detention center. Someone stole a UPS box from a home in the 200 block of S. Maple in Oak Park that contained 22 pounds of jalapenos. The estimated loss was $60. FOREST PARK Police stopped a car for failing to signal, and then saw the driver jump into the rear of the car while a passenger in the rear jumped into the driver's seat. Monday, March 25 Bret A. Cunningham, 18, of the 4200 block of Harvey Avenue in Western Springs, was arrested around 12:06 a.m. near the intersection of Howard and Hillgrove avenues, police said. Officers saw Cunningham walking down the street and determined he had been drinking alcohol, according to the report. He was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor. Saturday, March 23 Robert J. Beringer, 32, of the 4200 block of South Mozart Avenue in Chicago, was arrested in the 800 block of Burlington, police said. FOREST PARK A Franklin Park man was charged with battery after beating a woman in McDonald's with a "wet floor" sign, Forest Park police said. Levare Boston, 43, was charged after police were called to McDonald's, 420 Des Plaines Ave on March 12. Police saw a woman with cuts on her cheek and nose, and she said she knew Boston from the PADS shelter. Police reviewed video surveillance and said Boston was seen with another woman, later identified as his girlfriend. The victim tried to leave the restaurant after spotting Boston, who then got up and began arguing with her. Tuesday, March 19 A woman reported a homeless man making threats around 8:40 a.m. at the La Grange Road Train Station, 25 W. Burlington Ave., police said. A drunken student walked out of Lyons Township High School North Campus around 9:04 a.m. and went to a store, police said. Officers released the student to her mother. Monday, March 18 A woman received a call from someone pretending to be with Publisher’s Clearinghouse, who said he was going to be at her home in an hour and 45 minutes with a large check and prize, police said. The teenage suspect was taken into custody at the scene and charged with residential burglary, police said.
Western Springs police stopped a home burglary in progress Friday afternoon when they apprehended a 15-year-old Melrose Park teen at the scene of the incident. The teen had kicked in a rear basement door of an unoccupied home in the 1400 block of 39th Street before police responded to the burglary, according to the report. After 30 minutes, officers convinced the teen to leave the house and took him into custody. Investigators found items that they said the teen intended to steal scattered inside the home.
