Why does it seem that more McMansions and oversized monstrosities are for sale than other smaller homes? And why are the developers still building oversized houses inappropriate for the lot size and the neighborhood (with the Village's blessing)? Just wondering.   more ›

House Walk: Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Home

This week we're featuring one home from the Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk.

The Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk was Sunday, May 19, and this week we'll be featuring one of the homes each day. The event put the spotlight on local homes that are "historic or soon-to-be historic." Local businesses helped create the tablescapes and flowers throughout the homes, which were showcased by many volunteers.  Today we feature the Medema house at 4524 Lawn Ave., with my thoughts and some from the Historical Society:  This was the most interesting home on the tour because of the inspiration it drew from famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The day before this house walk, I did the Wright Plus house tour in Oak Park and learned a lot about him and the Prairie style. Owners Mike and Meg Medema dreamed about …

House Walk: Interior Designer's Home with Great Outdoor Areas

This week we're featuring one home from the Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk. Today we feature the Stevens home, which features a beautiful loggia.

Today we feature the Stevens house at 4833 Grand Ave.  This home featured my favorite single feature of the house walk: a three-season loggia with blue stone flooring, a fireplace and a television that leads out to a patio area and a grill. It seems perfect to sit outside on a breezy summer night or even a rainy day. Dan and Teresa had the home built in 2009, but the Pennsylvania Granite on the exterior …

House Walk: Complete Redesign of a Home Sold in the Family

This week we're featuring one home from the Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk. Today we feature the Hamor home, which was originally built by the current owner's aunt and uncle and features a chair of President Harding's.

Today we feature the Hamor house at 5041 Woodland.  This classic two-story brick home, originally built in 1955 as a ranch, was completely redesigned in 2011. Purchased in 1997 by Doug and Maureen Hamor, it's been in the family since it was built by Doug's aunt and uncle. This home was the gathering place for many family reunions when Doug was growing up.  The home's entry features a light-filled two-…

House Walk: Cottage Style with Lots of Light, Four-Season Porch

This week we're featuring one home from the Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk. Today we feature the Schuster home, which has a beautiful fireplace and light everywhere, including the basement.

Today we feature the Schuster house at 5104 Ellington Ave., my overall favorite along the tour because of its open and light-filled floor plan and its beautiful four-season porch. The Schusters have lived in Western Springs for a while but wanted to downsize after their son, Danny, left for college. Although this is a downsize, the open spaces, large windows and abundant storage make it a nice living …
