Boys squad advances to holiday tournament semifinal after narrow victory over St. Ignatius
6-foot-10 St. Ignatius center Nnanna Egwu—headed for the University of Illinois in 2011 on a basketball scholarship—is usually the most noticeable player on the court, in terms of both size and skill. While that didn't change in the quarterfinal round of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic—held at York High School— on Tuesday, Egwu's game high 22 points weren't enough to overcome a persistent Lyons Township squad, which emerged victorious, 62-58. "St. Ignatius is a very, very good team and we had to play a different type of defense [against them] than we did against Conant [yesterday]," Lyons head Coach Tom Sloan said. "We played man to man defense in the half court, they hit some big shots, but that was a big fourth quarter for us." …

Boys basketball opens Jack Tosh Holiday
Classic with dominant group victory
Lyons Township began its defense of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic title in impressive fashion Monday with a 96-70 win over Conant at York High School. The Lions (8-1, 2-0) came out strong, scoring a whopping 96 points, with 46 of them coming from the bench. Super-sub Dylan Fiedler led Lyons with 18 points. "Dylan's athletic and he's a wide-receiver on the football team, so he can run and catch well," LT head Coach Tom Sloan said. "He can do a lot of things on the defensive end, he can score in transition and he can hit a mid-range jumper. He brings us a lot off the bench." Thanks to strong transition play and defensive persistence, after falling behind 3-0, Lyons broke out to a 22-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The 15 point lead …

Lady Lions beat St. Ignatius at home but must
leapfrog No. 2 ranked Marist for shot at state.
The Lyons Township High School volleyball team is one step closer to an IHSA final four berth after defeating St. Ignatius College Prep at home in two games, 25-13, 25-17 last night. The team improves to a sparkling 38-1 overall record and is set to face Marist High School—the sole team that has found success against the 2010 Lions—in the super-sectional round at Thornton Fractional South High School Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. "We came out strong and were very consistent," LT head coach Joann Pyritz said. "In the second game we took a little bit of a mental break, and give [St. Ignatius] credit, they kept pushing and pushing. I'm pleased we finished the match in two games and it's always good when you can win a match in two and not have…

Home atmosphere serves LT well as girls squad dominates third straight IHSA playoff match.
The Lyons Township High School volleyball team enjoys playing at home—their play Tuesday night made that evident. The squad overcame conference opponent Oak Park-River Forest High School in two games (25-10, 25-11) to advance to the IHSA Lyons sectional final on Thursday, where they are to face St. Ignatius College Prep, which was also successful Tuesday night, beating De La Salle Institute (25-21, 25-13). "We had energy behind us tonight because we had some fans," LT junior standout Alexis Viliunas said. "Since we know our surroundings on the court, it was a lot easier to adjust to the things happening around us." In yet another straightforward match for Lyons—coached by Joann Pyritz—the team looked skilled in all facets of its game, …

The Lions battle from behind, advance to sectional round, defeating Thomas Kelly High School 3-1.
Conceding goals early in matches has been a common trend for the Lyons Township High School soccer program. Fighting back to win those matches, however, has also been a common trend for the La Grange based team. After going down 1-0 early on Friday, the Lions responded with three unanswered goals, cruising to a 3-1 victory in the IHSA regional finals over Thomas Kelly High School. The triumph sends Lyons into the sectional semifinal—scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday—against an undetermined opponent. "This has been a hard year, a lot harder than last year," senior midfielder Kyle Kurfirst said. "We knew Kelly was going to be good and it says a lot for our team to go down early but then fight back and take over the rest of the game. It feels …
