CHAMPS: LT Girls’ Gymnasts Win First State Title

A thrilling late come-from-behind finish sealed a .325-point win for the Lions; LT’s Kelsy Kurfirst also took the individual championship in floor exercise.

Facing a quarter-point deficit entering their final day of state competition, the Lyons Township girls’ gymnastics team rode improved balance-beam performances by Katie Carling and Michelle Cozza to take their first-ever Illinois state championship on Saturday, the Daily Herald reports. The win was capped for the Lions, the paper said, by sophomore Kelsy Kurfirst’s 9.725 floor routine, which won her a first-place title along with second place in vault, second in all-around and a T-3 on balance beam. "We were excited coming into today, not really knowing what to expect," Kurfirst told the Herald. "We knew we had the potential to do something big and we did it." LTHS Boys Soccer Campaign to Defend Title Off to Good Start

The reigning state champs demonstrate that 2010 can be '09 all over again, with two wins, zero losses and one tie, early in the season.

It's 2-0-1 so far for LT soccer—and the Lions are feeling pretty good about that, even, perhaps especially, the tie. Lyons Township comprehensively beat Sandburg High School 3-0 in their opening game of the season as Elliot Borge's spectacular solo effort was followed by two header goals by senior Peter Gabrek. The following day, Lyons defeated Hinsdale South High School 2-0 with goals from Horacio Sanchez and sophomore Brett Heimerdinger. Then came the game that local high school soccer followers were waiting for: LT vs. Neuqua Valley on Aug. 27th, a rematch of the 2009 Super-Sectional match in which the heavily favored Wildcats were sent home by a sensational Sanchez goal, the lone strike of the match.
