After a disappointing performance last year, WLTL roared back at this year’s John Drury Awards to capture the honor for the fifth time and the first since 2009.
Lyons Township High School’s radio station, WLTL 88.1FM, took the “Best Radio Station in the Nation” at the 10th annual John Drury Awards on Saturday, held at North Central College in Naperville. Lions students garnered a wealth of first-, second- and third-place prizes across the board, enough to triumph over other participating schools from as far away as Connecticut and California. (Listen to some of the award-winning pieces here.) “They just really worked really hard putting together the best pieces that they could, asking for advice, redoing them, revising them every step along the way to just have the best work that they could have out there,” said WLTL station advisor Chris Thomas. “I think the awards speak for themselves on how …

Phil LeBeau is the Chicago-based CNBC auto and airline industry reporter who got his start at Lyons Township High School's radio station, WLTL.
Back in the early 1980s, I worked at WLTL 88.1 FM, the Lyons Township High School radio station run by students. Phil LeBeau was on the news staff and was always very serious about the news. That’s saying something for someone who is a sophomore in high school. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise to me that I turned on the TV and saw him reporting on CNBC. LeBeau is the CNBC auto and airline industry reporter based out of the Chicago bureau. I had a chance to talk to LeBeau recently and learned about his journey from the La Grange radio station to working in Chicago for one of the major national networks, where his achievenments include interviewing President Barack Obama one-on-one. WLTL gave LeBeau the bug but it also helped him determine …

I might be wrong but I think I remember Phil, who was going to be the next student general manager, chasing Laurie, the outgoing general manager, all around Spring Rock Park until he graced her face with a whipped cream pie. I have been to a lot of these picnics so I may have the wrong people but I don't think so. DJ Strecker   more ›
