Just because there is a new "Hi Tech" water filtration system does not mean all the OLD pipes underground are not going to break. Remember you cannot cram 40 pounds of pressure into pipes that are corroded and can only handle 20 pounds of pressure.   more ›

Matt, The amount of money it takes to completly redo something like that is rather large, Look at Bluff Ave in La Grange, that took 3 years. They had to completly strip the road, underserface and sewage piping to get to the watermains. Western Springs (From what i know with their poor planing) it would take almost 5 or 6 for that to be possible.   more ›

Where do they test the water for its purity? From the water treatment center? Trust me, by the time that pure water passes through those old pipes into our homes, it is no longer pure.As for the promise of better water pressure, as dad always says, you can't cram 20 pounds of pressure into a 10 pound box, hence the broken pipes.   more ›

La Grange Highlands School Closes Due to Water Main Break, Will Re-Open Friday

A broken water main on Plainfield Road has caused facilities at Highlands Elementary and Middle schools to be closed for the day. Classes will resume on a normal schedule on Friday.

A water main break on Plainfield Road near La Grange Highlands Elementary and Middle schools caused the building to be closed for the day and classes canceled. The school alerted parents to the schools’ closing before classes began this morning, and posted an alert on their website at about 6:30 a.m. this morning. According to a spokeswoman at the school, afterschool activities and clubs will be canceled today as well. Classes and afterschool activities will resume tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 7 on a normal schedule. How Western Springs Repairs a Broken Water Main

There have been a disproportionately large number of water main breaks in Western Springs this spring and summer. Here’s how they get fixed—and why it can take a while.

In addition to plenty of other water issues related to the reverse-osmosis water plant construction, the Village of Western Springs has seen a skyrocketing number of water main breaks over the spring and summer of 2012. Village Board members and staff have suggested that this may be in part due to the dry weather that the area has experienced through most of the year so far, although this is difficult to confirm. The numbers have been as high as five or six breaks in a single weekend. Residents may have seen Public Works trucks at the site of water main breaks, and may wonder how such breaks are fixed, and why it can take extra time. We spoke with Village Director of Municipal Services Matt Supert, and consulted the Village’s online …

Sounds like the RO plant is our best option for water. Unfortunately there can be problems with well water contamination (see Sauk Village), as well as Lake water contamination (see most-polluted US beaches list and BP lawsuit payouts). Hopefully with control of our water the village will use the RO technology to lower our exposures to contaminants. I've actually heard from long-time residents …   more ›

Five Water Main Breaks Over Past Weekend

The escalation of breakage hit a new high on Saturday and Sunday with a combined five breaks spread over Old Town North, Field Park and Ridgewood.

Western Springs Public Works was kept busy over the past weekend as five water main leaks or breaks were reported in the Village, the latest in a spring and summer that has seen nearly unprecedented frequency of such breaks. J.U.L.I.E. (the Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) reported breaks at the following times and locations: The locations include two in Field Park, two in Ridgewood and one in Old Town North. The Public Works Department repaired all the breaks. “We think [the breaks] are due to the dry conditions and the hot weather,” Trustee Suzanne Glowiak said at Monday evening’s Board of Trustees meeting. “Hopefully they will not continue.” Director of Municipal Services Matt Supert said that his department is busily …

Broken Water Main Causing Brown (But 'Safe') Water

A massive break at the corner of Hillgrove and Linden Avenue is affecting water service to much of the Village.

A major water main break was discovered over the night between Monday and Tuesday at the corner of Hillgrove Avenue and Linden Avenue, and is causing much of Western Springs to recieve discolored water, the Village has announced. The Public Works Department is working on fixing the break, and has declared that the water "is safe to drink." The discoloration is due to rust and calcium carbonate that has been stirred up by directional flow changes in the pipes necessary to retain water service while the main is repaired. The line that broke is one that leads from the Village Water Plant to the Spring Rock Park water tower, and thus is causing major disruption in service to much of the town.  Water main breaks, especially in Old Town North, …
