Ronald L. Martin, who perished in last Saturday’s house fire along with his wife Eleanor, formerly held a high position at Argonne National Laboratories.
The 90-year-old man who was killed in a house fire on the 900 block of Kensington Avenue in La Grange on Dec. 8 had a distinguished career as an “internationally recognized” scientist, according to an obituary published in the Chicago Tribune. Ronald L. Martin served in the navy during World War II, received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago, and worked with the famous physisict Enrico Fermi as a grad student. Martin produced pioneering work in laser tech “recognized” by Nobel laureate, Hans Bethe, worked for Argonne National Laboratory and retired as director of the High Energy Physics Division, and later founded a company working on proton therapy, the obit said. The La Grange Fire Department confirmed on Thursday that the two people killed in a house fire early Saturday morning on the 900 block of Kensington Avenue were Roland Martin, 90, and Eleanor Martin, 91, husband and wife. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Roland Martin died from a combination of carbon monoxide intoxication and an inhalation of smoke and soot and Eleanor Martin from inhalation injuries, both caused by the house fire. Roland Martin was pronounced dead at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at 3:32 a.m., the Chicago Tribune reported; according to the La Grange Fire Department, he had perished on the scene. A man and woman died after a three-alarm fire broke out in a home on the 900 block of Kensington Avenue in La Grange at around 1:38 p.m. on Saturday morning. The man, who was in his 90s, was pronounced dead at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at 3:32 a.m., the Chicago Tribune reported; according to the La Grange Fire Department, he had perished on the scene.
