Western Springs Poll: Is Village Water Bugging You?

Water main breaks causing cloudy water, minerals causing hardness and damaging appliances, concerns about fluoride, restrictions... sound off here!

One of the most unique things about Western Springs is that we draw our own water (everyone except Timber Trails, that is) from deep wells, whereas surrounding communities like Hinsdale and La Grange pump in water from Lake Michigan. In fact, the recent decision to was chosen over switching to lake water precisely because the Village likes having autonomy over the water and water prices.

But recently, water has been a hot—even inflammatory—topic around town. The transition to reverse-osmosis has left the Village unable to soften its water, leaving mineral residue to wreak havoc on appliances and surfaces (this has gotten worse over the last two weeks as the Village has needed to pull from its emergency Well No. 1.) Additionally, fluoride levels in the water are higher than normal, concerning some locals .

If that wasn't enough, this spring has seen a huge number of , particularly in southwestern Old Town North, resulting in intermittently cloudy tap water (the Village says it is safe.) And to top off the controversy, the Village has imposed to avoid drops in water pressure during times of high use... which, according to the Board of Trustees on Monday night, aren't yet entirely being followed.
